What is a timber bastaing?

The timber bastaing is a longitudinal piece with a rectangular cross-section. Larger than a rafter and smaller than a timber plank, the bastaing is used in roof frame construction. It serves as a purlin, joist, or rafter. The timber bastaing also serves as a structural element in the construction of decking, parquet flooring, or external insulation cladding.

How to choose a timber bastaing?

The choice of a bastaing depends first on the location of the construction. For cladding or a terrace, choose class 3 or 4 bastaings (Douglas fir, pine, and fir with pressure treatment). For a roof frame or interior framing, class 2 bastaings are suitable. Then choose your bastaings according to the load weight. The larger the bastaing cross-section, the higher its strength. For load calculations, follow the advice of our professionals.

Characteristics of timber bastaings

Timber bastaings belong to the category of construction materials. They are used as structural timber, framing, and flooring. Depending on their use class, they are used indoors or outdoors. The cross-section and length of bastaings vary depending on the sawmill and manufacturer.

Cross-section of solid wood bastaings

The cross-section of the timber bastaing is rectangular. The most common widths range from 145 to 180 mm. The thickness of bastaings falls within a range of between 50 and 75 mm. You will find, for example, bastaings in the following dimensions (in mm):

  • section 63 × 160;
  • section 80 × 160;
  • section 50 × 150;
  • section 75 × 145.

Length of a timber bastaing

The timber bastaing is a large-section piece. It is used in construction and formwork. To meet various requirements, manufacturers offer standard lengths of 3, 4, 5, or 6 metres. Some manufacturers offer bastaings in large and very large lengths (up to 10 metres).

Most common wood species for bastaings

The timber bastaing is produced from the sawing of softwood logs. The main species used are spruce, red pine, Scots pine, and fir. The Douglas fir bastaing is a quality product, known for its strength and durability.

Use class of timber bastaings

Treated bastaings are use class 2, 3, or 4 products. The most common treatment is surface treatment (spraying, dipping), and the timber is yellow. In-depth treatment (pressure treatment, green timber) guarantees a rafter of use class 3 or 4. The untreated bastaing is, depending on the wood species, of use class 1, 2, or 3.

The different models of Woodup timber bastaings

The timber bastaing is available as a bastaing for interior construction and a bastaing for exterior works. The interior bastaing can be untreated, or benefit from a so-called surface treatment. The exterior bastaing is in Douglas fir with or without pressure treatment.

The timber bastaing for exterior works

For exterior works, choose a treated timber bastaing. The most effective treatment is pressure treatment. The bastaing can be in contact with the ground (class 4). Douglas fir is a species that, in its natural untreated state, is suitable for exterior works (cladding, decking).

Interior timber bastaings

The untreated timber bastaing in Douglas fir is perfect for roof frame construction. It is use class 3. Fir and spruce bastaings are available:

  • untreated (for indoor use in dry conditions);
  • treated (class 3).
