What is timber boarding?
Timber boarding is one of the construction materials. More precisely, timber boards are planks designed to complete the construction of a roof framework. The use of boards in traditional roof framing serves to support roofing materials. Boarding comes in different wood species. Essentially, on our site these are Douglas pine and fir.
Fir timber boards for roof framing
Fir is the most common wood species, along with spruce. The price of these boards is economical. These construction materials receive an essential treatment for use as roof framing and roofing boards. It is in fir and spruce boards that the most varied sections and lengths can be found.
Roof boards and Douglas pine cladding
Pine is a wood naturally endowed with interesting strength and durability characteristics for construction. It is an untreated wood belonging to class 2 excluding sapwood. Most pine boards are made from Douglas pine (class 3 excluding sapwood), a species suited for cladding and panelling.
How to choose timber boarding?
Choose your timber board model according to the nature of your construction project. For a cladding project, opt for Douglas pine boards. On the other hand, for roof framing and roofing boards, you can look towards fir or spruce. Regarding treatment, class 2 is a minimum for wood in occasional contact with a moisture level above 20% (roof framing). For cladding, class 3 is strongly recommended.
Technical criteria for choosing timber boarding
Construction boarding exists in rough and/or planed finish. To ensure better durability for the framework, you can opt for boards that have received a preservative treatment. Furthermore, boarding comes in different dimensions.
Preservative treatment of boards
The treatment applied to the boards is insecticide, fungicide and moisture-resistant. There are several wood treatment techniques (autoclave, spray, dipping). Depending on the wood species, the treatment applied differs. Scots pine or maritime pine receive autoclave treatment. It belongs to class 4. On the other hand, the treatment of pine (spruce) boards is not autoclave. Their resistance class is 2. Please note that untreated boarding also exists.
Dimensions of timber boards
The section of timber construction elements corresponds to their height and width. Boards are planks whose width is more than four times their thickness. Depending on the supplier, timber boarding comes in different sections (in millimetres) and different lengths (in metres).
Section of a timber board
The width of boards ranges from 100 to 220 mm, their height from 12 to 27 mm. The section of boards (height by width) is standardised to facilitate roof framing and roofing work. Here are some examples of dimensions:
- section 16 × 140 mm;
- section 22 × 180 mm;
- section 27 × 195 mm.
Boards are often available in all widths, regardless of their thickness.
Length of the different timber boards
The length of timber boards also varies greatly. Indeed, the use of boards for roof framing, roofing and cladding requires significant dimensional variety. Treated or not, the board is available in the following lengths:
- length 2 metres;
- length 3 metres;
- length 4 metres;
- length 5 metres.
Boards in intermediate dimensions are also available in trade.
The advantages of Woodup solid timber boards
The Woodup timber board benefits from a protective treatment. All our boards meet the requirements of standards NF EN 335 (moisture resistance) and NF EN 350 (resistance to wood-rotting fungi). Woodup timber boards are class 3. The Woodup sawmill produces resistant and durable boards, perfect as roofing material substrate.
