What is a wood batten or a lath?

The wood batten/lath is a longitudinal piece with a square or rectangular section. The lath or batten is intended for construction and fitting out. Available in several species and dimensions, wood laths and battens are sold at low prices. Opt for the lath for your timber framing and roofing work. For fitting-out work, favour the batten.

Construction timber: definition of a lath

The lath is a small-section timber piece used mainly in timber framing and roofing. Laths are used to create lathing, a necessary step for the installation of roofing elements (tiles, slates). Laths are elements intended for exterior construction.

Construction and fitting out: definition of a batten

Battens are small-section timber elements. Their use is very common in shop fitting. Battens are also used in insulation work, cladding or insulation material installation. Due to their resistance class, wood battens are used primarily indoors.

How to choose a wood batten or a lath?

The quality of laths is a determining selection criterion for the solidity of a timber frame and a roof. Your choice of wood batten/lath must also be based on its section. This is the criterion that determines the solidity of the structure. For example, laths can support tiles weighing up to 75 kg/m². Finally, check the timber class carefully. Install laths of class 2 as a minimum. In the event of a risk of termites or woodworm, plan for class D laths and battens.

Characteristics of wood battens/laths

Supply your construction site with quality laths and battens. Choose battens and laths that resist biological attack (fungi, insects). Favour a wood batten/lath resistant to moisture. To purchase laths and battens suited to your needs, familiarise yourself with the main characteristics of the available products.

Classification of wood battens and laths

Opt for laths and battens resistant to biological attack and moisture. Standards NF EN 335-1 to 3 determine the resistance of timber to moisture. Favour laths and battens of class 2 at a minimum. Standard EN 350-2 measures the resistance of materials to biological risks. Laths and battens of class 2 (durable resistance to wood-decaying fungi) and class D (durable resistance to longhorn beetles, woodworm and termites) are preferable.

The different wood species for laths and battens

Laths are available mainly in softwood: pine, fir, spruce or Douglas pine. They are available as rough timber. Laths have a moisture content that often exceeds 20% and contain knots. The batten is available in pine, fir, spruce, Douglas pine, ash, oak or poplar. Quality battens have no knots (or small knots) and are dry and planed.

Section of the wood batten/lath

The section of the wood batten/lath consists of its height and its width. The width of laths varies from 27 mm to 60 mm, for a height of 14 to 40 mm. The section of wood battens also varies depending on the type. You will find battens with the following dimensions, as an example:

  • battens with widths of 38, 40, 50, 60, or 80 mm;
  • battens with heights of 25, 35, 45, or 50 mm.

Length of wood battens and laths

Due to the diversity of construction constraints in timber framing and roofing, laths are available in many lengths. Most standard laths come in 2, 3, 4 or 5 metre lengths. Battens, due to their use in framing, fitting out and joinery, are very often available in 2 or 4 metre lengths.
