What is a wooden handrail?

A wooden handrail is a slender piece. Its length is 2, 2.5 or 3 metres and its diameter is 40 to 60 mm. The handrail can be round, flat or moulded. This product provides support and makes climbing the staircase safer. Handrails are also used as top rails for safety barriers (balustrades, guardrails or balusters). Whether a handrail or a rail, fixing is to the wall, to a post or to brackets. A wooden handrail adds warmth to the design of a room or a home.

Choosing a wooden handrail: our advice

Our wooden handrails offer a solution for those seeking a more timeless style. To choose your handrail or baluster wisely, first consider its shape. A round handrail is more modern than a moulded handrail. Then take care to measure the length you need. Finally, choose a wood species that matches the wood of your staircase. Also think about harmonising your product with the appearance of the wall where you plan to fix it.

Characteristics of our wooden handrails

Our balusters and handrails are sold individually or as a handrail kit. You receive a kit with a standard wall fixing plate or one adapted to DDA standards.
Our wooden handrails are sold in different lengths. Use our configurator to select the product that will enhance your décor!

Handrails and balusters: smooth products with no pre-drilled holes

In order to adapt to your interior and allow installation that meets your needs, the Woodup wooden handrail is not pre-drilled. Opting for a handrail without holes makes fixing easier and guarantees an exceptional level of finish.

Wooden handrail: possible combinations

Create your own combinations of balusters and handrails! Dress your staircase and balustrade with the same wood. To complement our range (balustrade and wooden handrail), we have easy-to-fit accessories. End caps and stainless steel connectors provide a finish suited to your choice.

Shape variants of wooden handrails

Moulded wooden handrails have a more traditional style, while round handrails have a more contemporary style. Choose a wooden handrail for a balustrade or staircase that enhances both comfort and safety. Our various products meet the most demanding usage criteria. Discover below the shape variants of our wooden rails and handrails.

Wooden handrail: round

You already know the round stainless steel rail or aluminium rail? You can order a round-section rail or handrail entirely in wood! The design is perfect. The warm look of wood echoes your staircase. Choose a round handrail with a diameter of 42 or 50 mm depending on the level of comfort desired.

Moulded wooden handrail

Top your landing balustrade with a moulded wooden handrail! Install an oak rail with a moulded profile in your rustic stairwell. The dimensions of the rail (50 x 50 mm) and the groove provide an even more reassuring level of comfort. Our products are compatible with our fixing brackets.

Flat wooden handrail

The flat wooden handrail is making a great comeback! This product is ideal for narrow stairwells. Wall fixing is possible thanks to suitable brackets, in black, white or zinc-plated stainless steel. Select this staircase product, with a 70 x 25 mm cross-section, available in lengths from 1.5 to 3 metres.

Wood species for our handrails: the variants

Choose products with an excellent quality-to-price ratio. Staircase experts for 3 generations, we favour the following species for our rails and handrails. For indoor use: fir, beech or oak. For an outdoor staircase: Douglas pine or exotic wood. These species are weather-resistant and naturally suitable for outdoor use, but not in contact with the ground.

Rails and handrails: our indoor wooden products

Match your pine or fir staircase with a handrail in the same wood! Choose between a round, flat or moulded rail. Complete your order with our fixing brackets and receive your products within 10 days, with free delivery on orders over £120. Is your staircase in oak or beech? Harmonise your interior with an oak or beech handrail. Simplify installation — order the handrail kit with fixing brackets!

Exotic wood handrail: indoor and outdoor

Be tempted by the exotic wood variants of our rails and handrails! Choose, to your taste, a moulded or round (50 mm diameter) exotic wood handrail. We offer an exotic wood class 4 (Sipo) that can be fixed to an exterior wall. To make installing your exotic wood rail easier, opt for the handrail kit with stainless steel fixing brackets!

Finishing your wooden handrail: our solutions

We recommend varnishing or painting your wooden handrail to protect it from stains and wear. Wood is indeed a material that needs to be protected and maintained. Here are the details of the wood finishing products available for sale in our shop. Do not hesitate to contact us if you need information about a particular product, or to order samples, which will give you a much better idea than photographs.

Wood oils

Among the various protective oils for a wooden staircase handrail, which can offer a matt or satin finish, we offer:

  • hard oil for wood : this oil penetrates deep into the wood fibre to strengthen it and protect it against stains and moisture. A hard oil for wood is more effective than a simple oil, while being less chemical than a varnish.

  • tinted finishing oil for wood : this oil contains pigments that tint the wood while keeping the natural grain visible. Several shades are available: light oak, dark oak, mahogany, wengé, grey, brick red, etc. Light-coloured woods such as ash and fir are best suited to receiving coloured tinted oils.

  • colourless oil for wood : colourless oils protect your wooden staircase handrail without tinting or yellowing it. They are specially designed for those who wish to keep the appearance of raw wood, without compromising on the protection of the woodwork.

  • maintenance oil for wood : to keep your contemporary or traditional solid wood staircase looking its best over the years, use a maintenance oil from time to time. With its matt finish and colourless tint, this oil preserves the appearance and robustness of your woodwork.

  • Anti-stain primer for tannic woods : if you opt for our solid wood staircase handrails in oak, chestnut or acacia, we recommend applying a primer for tannic woods before any finishing. This product prevents the tannins naturally present in these wood species from rising to the surface and permanently staining your woodwork.

Wood stains for indoor or outdoor use

Wood stains provide robust protection and are perfectly suited to exterior woodwork, which is more exposed to bad weather and UV rays. Unlike oils, which penetrate deep into the wood fibre, stains form an external protective layer. We recommend this type of finish for a wooden handrail intended for a terrace or an outdoor staircase. Stains are available in tinted or colourless versions.

Wood paints

You can absolutely choose to paint a wooden handrail to match the design of the surrounding elements in your interior décor or the architecture of your home. You will find in our shop paints for all wood species: fir, Douglas pine, oak, larch or ash. Wood paints are opaque and do not reveal the wood grain as a stain, oil or tinted varnish would.

Varnish for woodwork

Varnishing a wooden handrail gives you better protection than an oil. The finish can be gloss or matt, as you prefer. Varnish is particularly suitable for staircases or floors that will see intensive use (hotels, holiday cottages, etc.). They are generally less suited to outdoor use than a wood stain.

FAQ: your questions, our answers

Here are some frequently asked questions from our customers about our staircase kits with wooden handrail. Our customer service team is of course available to assist you with your fitting and construction projects.

How do I configure the wooden handrail my staircase needs?

To precisely configure the length of wooden handrail your staircase requires, you will need to gather some information, such as the required length. The handrail length you need must be calculated based on the slope of the staircase, not the floor length. Do not hesitate to add a comfortable margin of a few tens of centimetres. You can then cut the excess and add finishing end caps for handrails made from the material of your choice, in ash or aluminium for example, depending on the style you are looking for.

Are the Woodup wooden handrails and balustrades made in France?

Our joinery workshop is located in France, more precisely in Auvergne, near Clermont-Ferrand. All our joinery and construction products come from our workshops or are imported from a European country. We are committed to providing you with quality, robust and durable products, so that you are more than satisfied with your purchase.

Do I need to hire a professional to install my staircase with wooden handrail?

Our flat-pack wooden staircases come with an illustrated instruction guide containing all the information you need to assemble it yourself, as most of our customers do. The fixings are included, but you may need to obtain additional screws depending on the nature of the surface on which you plan to fix your staircase. Do not hesitate to contact our customer support team for personalised information based on your situation.
