Sawn Fir Post – Sections 10x10cm to 15x15cm, Lengths 200cm and 240cm
This post in solid sawn fir is a square-section piece intended for load-bearing structures: pergola, carport, garden shelter, fencing, raised decking. Available in 3 sections — 10x10cm, 12x12cm, 15x15cm — and in two lengths: 200cm and 240cm. The piece is delivered untreated, ready to be protected according to its use and exposure.
Sawn fir is the most economical option in square section. These sections cover light to intermediate constructions: garden shelters, sheds, hutches, ancillary structures. The sawn appearance suits non-visible applications or projects where the natural character of the wood is valued.

Which section to choose?
The choice of section depends on the post height, the load to be supported and the centre spacing between posts:
- ✓ 10x10cm — small lightweight structures, single-pitch carports, fencing
- ✓ 12x12cm — standard pergola, garden shelter, decking up to 3m span
- ✓ 15x15cm — heavy timber framing, portal frames, major load-bearing structures
For structures subject to significant loads (snow, wind, spans> 4m), consult a timber structural engineer or carpenter for precise sizing.
Installation advice
Never bury an untreated post directly — even class 3 douglas deteriorates rapidly in contact with damp soil. For buried posts, use stainless steel fixing plates anchored in concrete, or opt for class 4 pressure-treated timber (autoclave). For posts set on a slab, use adjustable galvanised or stainless steel post shoes. Apply protection to all faces before installation, paying particular attention to cut ends.
Maintenance and protection
For dry interior use, no treatment required. For any outdoor use, fungicide-insecticide treatment recommended before installation. Do not bury without class 4 protection. Untreated fir deteriorates rapidly in damp conditions.
WoodUp advice
For a garden shelter with sawn fir posts, always treat the ends (cut extremities) with a fungicide product — these are the areas most exposed to water ingress.
Before you buy: Sawn fir may show visible knots and a fibrous surface — this is its natural sawn appearance. Light sanding (grit 80) is sufficient if the piece is to be visible.
Frequently asked questions
Which post section for a pergola?
For a standard residential pergola (3–4m span, lightweight roof), the 12x12cm section is generally sufficient for a height of 240cm. For a pergola with a planted or loaded roof, or spans> 4m, choose a larger section. If in doubt, consult a carpenter or structural engineer.
Can this post be buried directly in the ground?
No. An untreated post must not be placed in direct contact with damp soil — even class 3 douglas deteriorates in soil contact (class 4 required). Use a fixing plate anchored in concrete, or order class 4 pressure-treated timber for buried posts.
Does this post need to be treated before use?
Untreated fir is sensitive to moisture — a fungicide-insecticide treatment is recommended for any outdoor use. For dry interior use, no treatment is required.
What is the difference between a sawn post and a planed post?
The sawn post retains the natural sawn appearance with slightly irregular faces and nominal dimensions (e.g. 100x100mm). The planed post is machined on all 4 faces to achieve smooth surfaces and precise dimensions, slightly smaller than nominal. For visible structures, the planed post offers a neater finish. For concealed or embedded structures, the sawn option is equivalent.
Can these posts be painted or stained?
Yes. Lightly sand the faces (grit 80–120) before application. For exterior paint, apply a special resinous wood primer. For stain or oil, apply directly to dry wood. Planed posts offer better adhesion for finishing products.
