What is a solid wood rafter?

The solid wood rafter is a longitudinal piece with a square or rectangular cross-section. Made from softwood, the timber rafter is used in the construction of roof frames, cladding, and timber framing. The wood rafter is available in various lengths (2 to 6 metres), with or without treatment.

How to choose your wood rafters?

Choose your wood rafter according to the situation. For outdoor use, favour the pressure-treated rafter. The Douglas fir rafter is a perfect alternative. The other selection criterion for rafters is their cross-section. This depends on the anticipated load, the spacing between rafters, and the type of construction.

Characteristics of wood rafters

Wood rafters are extremely versatile construction timbers. With a cross-section intermediate between a floor joist batten and a bastaing, the rafter is available in various lengths. The most common species are softwoods, with or without treatment.

Wood rafter species

The most commonly used wood species for making rafters are softwoods. Pine rafters, fir rafters, and spruce rafters are the most common products due to their attractive prices. Douglas fir rafters are premium-range products.

Dimensions of a solid wood rafter

The length of the most common wood rafters ranges from 2 metres to 6 metres. Rafter manufacturers, in order to meet load requirements, offer rafters in a wide variety of cross-sections. You will find, for example, the following cross-sections in mm:

  • section 63 × 75 or 55 × 75;
  • section 60 × 80 or 60 × 40;
  • section 55 × 35 or 36 × 97;
  • section 75 × 110 or 50 × 70.

Use class of wood rafters

The most common wood rafter is a piece with use class 2 treatment. The pressure-treated rafter is a use class 3 or 4 rafter. Untreated rafters are also available. They are used in non-structural construction, indoors, in dry conditions.

Strength class of a wood rafter

Rafters are structural and roofing construction timbers. They serve as supports for battens and roofing elements. Fir, spruce, pine, and Douglas fir rafters are of mechanical strength class C18 (traditional roof framing) or C24 (industrial roof framing and timber frame construction).

The different uses of wood rafters

The pine, spruce, or fir rafter is available in two main models. The first is the rafter for exterior construction. It benefits from an in-depth treatment. The second is the rafter for interior use (roof frame construction), with or without treatment.

The wood rafter for exterior construction

This wood rafter benefits from pressure treatment. It belongs to use class 3 or 4. It is a timber piece intended for the construction of decking, cladding (external thermal insulation), and fence panel installation.

The wood rafter for roof framing and roofing

The wood rafter for interior construction is available with or without treatment. This treatment is of the surface type (spraying or dipping). This rafter belongs to use class 1, 2, or 3 depending on the wood species. Untreated Douglas fir is use class 3.

The qualities of the Woodup solid wood rafter

Woodup offers the Douglas fir rafter. With a higher density, Douglas fir guarantees far superior durability and strength compared to other softwoods. Choose from our planed rafters or our rough-sawn wood rafters.

Woodup rough-sawn wood rafter

Choose the rough-sawn wood rafter for all framing and non-visible structure construction. Woodup manufactures in its sawmill rafters of 200 or 250 cm in length. You have the choice between the rough-sawn wood rafter with a 60 × 40 mm cross-section or the rough-sawn wood rafter with a 60 × 80 mm cross-section.

Woodup 4-sided planed wood rafter

For the construction of framing, roof structures, or visible structures, choose planed rafters. We supply rafters in lengths of 200 or 250 cm. The cross-section of planed Douglas fir rafters is your choice of 55 × 75 mm or 55 × 35 mm.
