Raw pine rafter

Pine Joist / Rafter Raw – Interior Decking and Framing, Sections 60x40mm and 60x80mm
This raw solid pine rafter/joist is a rectangular-section piece intended for floor joists, interior frameworks and cladding supports — primarily for indoor use. Available in two sections — 60x40mm for light structures and 60x80mm for more demanding spans — and in two lengths: 200cm and 240cm. The piece is supplied rough-sawn and untreated.
Raw pine is the most economical species for interior structures. Its straight grain and light weight make it easy to cut and work with. The rough-sawn texture gives it an authentic look appreciated in interiors with a natural or industrial feel, but may require sanding if the piece is visible. The term "rafter" refers to use in roofing or inclined structures, "joist" to horizontal use as a support for decking or flooring boards — the piece itself is identical, only the use differs. Indoor use only.

Uses and applications
As an interior floor joist: the primary use of these sections. The 60x40mm section is suitable for spacings of 40cm maximum under a timber floor. The 60x80mm section is suited to longer spans between supports. Untreated pine is for dry interior use only — these sections are not suitable for outdoor decking or roof framing.
As a decking joist: horizontal support to which decking boards are fixed. The 60x40mm section is suitable for spacings of 40cm maximum under a timber floor, the 60x80mm section for longer spans. For indoor use only — untreated pine is not suitable for outdoor decking or roof framing. Allow a 5 to 8mm gap between joists to ensure ventilation beneath the deck.
As interior framing: partition studs, counter-wall battens, interior cladding support or ground floor structure.
Installation tips
Store pieces flat on a ventilated support, off the ground and sheltered from rain before installation — untreated pine absorbs moisture quickly. For decking, use A4 stainless steel screws or fixing clips. For framing, use bolts or galvanised nails in accordance with best practice. Outdoors, apply a fungicide-insecticide treatment before installation if the species is not naturally resistant.
Maintenance and protection
For dry interior use, no treatment is required. If the piece is visible (exposed floor, partition), apply an oil-wax or varnish to protect against dirt. Do not use outdoors without a suitable fungicide-insecticide treatment — pine is susceptible to fungal attack in damp conditions.
WoodUp tip
For an interior pine 60x80mm joist floor, the standard spacing is 40cm. Ensure the joists rest on a stable support and that underfloor ventilation is provided. These sections are suited to interior floors and light framing — they are not sized for roof framing (DTU 31.1) or outdoor decking (pine class 1).
Important before purchasing: Raw untreated pine is sensitive to moisture variations — allow the pieces to acclimatise for 48 hours in their installation environment before fitting, to limit movement after fixing.
Frequently asked questions
Which section should I choose between 60x40mm and 60x80mm?
The 60x40mm section is suitable for light structures: decking joists at spacings ≤ 40cm, light roof rafters with spans ≤ 1.5m, framing battens. The 60x80mm section is suited to longer spans, heavier loads (heavy tiles, snow) or wider spacings. If in doubt about sizing, consult a carpenter or timber engineering office.
What is the difference between a rafter and a joist?
It is the same piece of wood — the difference lies solely in the use. As a rafter, the piece is placed at an angle beneath a roof covering. As a joist, it is laid flat, horizontally, as a support for decking or flooring boards. The section and length are identical in both cases.
Does this pine joist need to be treated before use?
Untreated pine is a class 2 species — suitable for dry interiors. For any outdoor or damp-area use, a fungicide-insecticide treatment is essential before installation. For dry interior use (framing, flooring), no treatment is required.
Can these pieces be cut to the required length?
Yes. Solid pine cuts cleanly with a circular saw or mitre saw. Order the length immediately above your requirement (200 or 240cm) and cut on site. Deburr the cut edges and apply a protective coat to the cuts if used outdoors.
What joist section should I use for 21mm decking boards?
For 21mm thick boards laid on joists, the 60x40mm section with a spacing of 40cm maximum is the standard configuration. For 27mm boards or dense timbers (IPE, thick douglas), the spacing can increase to 50cm. The 60x80mm section is recommended if the spacing exceeds 50cm or if you are laying thick cladding boards.
