Rough Fir Board – width 150mm and 200mm — thickness 24mm, Lengths 200cm and 240cm
This rough solid fir board is a low-thickness, wide piece intended for cladding, formwork, flooring, fencing and fitting-out work. Delivered untreated, it retains all the natural properties of wood and can be easily worked with a saw, plane or router. The available dimensions cover common construction and interior or exterior fitting-out uses.
The rough fir board retains the natural appearance of the sawing — slightly fibrous surface, open grain with knots characteristic of fir. More economical than planed, it is suited to applications where the surface is not visible or will be sanded before finishing. Indoor and outdoor use with appropriate treatment in protected areas.

Uses and applications
Ideal for DIY and self-build projects: concrete formwork, structural cladding, wardrobe backing, boxes, packaging. The 150mm width suits compact projects, the 200mm width covers larger surfaces.
Installation tips
Store boards flat on a ventilated support, off the ground, before installation. Allow an expansion gap of 3 to 5mm between each board for outdoor use — wood expands in width with moisture. Fix with A4 stainless steel or galvanised screws to avoid rust marks on the wood. For vertical cladding, use counter-batten battens to ensure ventilation behind the cladding.
Maintenance and protection
In dry indoor conditions, no treatment is required for a structural application. For a visible surface, sand with 80-grit then 120-grit before applying oil, varnish or paint. Outdoors, fungicide-insecticide treatment is essential — rough fir is particularly sensitive to moisture.
WoodUp tip
For formwork or structural cladding, the 200mm rough fir board is suitable without sanding or preparation. For a visible surface (wardrobe backing, cladding), a quick sand with 80-grit paper significantly improves the finish.
Please note before purchasing: The rough fir board may show width variations due to sawing — measure each piece before installation if consistency is important for your project.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a rough board and a planed board?
The rough board retains the sawn appearance — slightly irregular surface, natural texture, slightly larger dimensions. The planed board has been machine-processed on its faces to achieve a smooth surface and precise dimensions. For visible cladding or a decorative application, planed gives a more refined finish. For formwork or a concealed structure, rough is sufficient and more economical.
How to avoid shrinkage cracks on untreated boards?
Shrinkage cracks are natural on untreated solid wood — they do not affect the strength of the board. To limit them, store boards under cover until installation, apply a saturator or oil as soon as the board is put into use, and avoid alternating exposure to rain and intense sun. On wide boards (200mm), cracks may be more pronounced than on narrow formats.
Can these boards be used for an indoor floor?
Yes, for dry indoor use. For a visible floor, sand the visible face (80-grit then 120-grit) and apply a floor varnish or parquet oil. The 27mm thickness (rough) is sufficient for a floor on joists at a maximum 40cm centre spacing.
Do these boards need to be treated before outdoor installation?
Untreated fir is sensitive to moisture outdoors — a fungicide-insecticide treatment is essential before outdoor installation. In dry indoor conditions, no treatment is required.
Can these boards be painted or stained directly?
Yes. Lightly sand the surface (120-grit) before application. For paint, apply a bonding primer suitable for resinous wood. For stain or oil, apply directly to dry wood. Planed wood offers better adhesion than rough and consumes less product.
