Planed Douglas Board – 150x24mm and 200x24mm (24mm thickness), lengths 200cm and 240cm
This planed solid Douglas board is a piece of low thickness and great width, intended for cladding, shuttering, flooring, fencing and fitting-out work. Delivered untreated, it retains all the natural properties of the wood and is easy to work with a saw, plane or router. The available dimensions cover common construction and exterior or interior fitting-out applications.
Planing gives a smooth surface and sharp edges on all faces — dimensions are slightly smaller than rough-sawn (24mm planed thickness vs 27mm rough-sawn) due to machining. This finish gives a more refined appearance and simplifies installation for exposed cladding, decking or visible joinery. Use — natural durability, exterior above ground contact.

Uses and applications
The 150x24mm format is preferred for classic vertical cladding and slat fencing. The 200x24mm format covers more surface per board — well suited to large facades and decking. The planed surface allows paint, stain or oil to be applied directly without prior sanding.
Installation advice
Store the boards flat on a ventilated support, off the ground, before installation. Allow an expansion gap of 3 to 5mm between each board for exterior use — wood expands in width according to moisture levels. Fix with A4 stainless steel or galvanised screws to avoid rust marks on the wood. For vertical cladding, use counter-batten strips to ensure ventilation behind the cladding.
Maintenance and protection
Same recommendations as for rough-sawn — apply saturator or exterior oil before installation, renew every 2-3 years. Planed surfaces absorb finishing products better and give a more uniform result. Natural greying occurs without protection but is more even.
WoodUp Tip
For planed board cladding, apply the stain or oil before installation on all faces — including the edges and the back face, which would otherwise absorb moisture by capillary action.
Please note before purchasing: The 24mm thickness is the dimension after planing. When calculating quantities, use the actual usable width (150 or 200mm) and not the rough width before machining.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a rough-sawn board and a planed board?
The rough-sawn board retains its sawn appearance — slightly irregular surface, natural texture, slightly larger dimensions. The planed board has been machined on its faces to achieve a smooth surface and precise dimensions. For exposed cladding or a decorative application, planed gives a more refined result. For shuttering or a concealed structure, rough-sawn is sufficient and more economical.
How to avoid shrinkage cracks on untreated boards?
Shrinkage cracks are natural on untreated solid wood — they do not affect the strength of the board. To limit them, store the boards under cover until installation, apply a saturator or oil as soon as work begins, and avoid alternating exposure to rain and intense sun. On wide boards (200mm), cracks may be more pronounced than on narrow formats.
Can these boards be used for an interior floor?
Yes. The 24mm thickness (planed) is suitable for flooring on joists at 40cm centres. The planed face can be directly oiled or varnished without prior sanding, which simplifies installation.
Should these boards be treated before exterior installation?
Untreated Douglas is naturally durable (Class 3) — it is suitable for exterior cladding and fencing without mandatory treatment. To slow greying and shrinkage cracks, apply a UV saturator before installation and renew every 2-3 years. Untreated Douglas will grey within 6-12 months but retains all its mechanical properties.
Can these boards be painted or stained directly?
Yes. Lightly sand the surface (120 grit) before application. For paint, apply a suitable bonding primer for resinous wood. For stain or oil, apply directly to dry wood. Planed wood offers better adhesion than rough-sawn and uses less product.
