Planed fir board

Planed Fir Board – width 150mm and 200mm — thickness 24mm, Lengths 200cm and 240cm
This planed solid fir board is a piece of low thickness and great width, intended for cladding, shuttering, flooring, fencing and fitting-out work. Supplied untreated, it retains all the natural properties of wood and is easy to work with a saw, plane or router. The available dimensions cover common uses in construction and outdoor or indoor fitting-out.
Originating from the Massif Central, this planed fir board has a smooth, even surface, ready to receive paint, varnish, oil or stain without prior sanding. Its natural light tone blends with all interior styles. Slight shrinkage cracks may appear naturally — they do not affect the strength of the wood. Interior and protected exterior use with appropriate treatment.

Uses and applications
The 150mm width is suited to light shelving, partition panels, interior cladding and linings. The 200mm width is suitable for tables, benches, worktops and flooring on joists. The 24mm planed thickness is the standard dimension for common joinery projects.
Installation advice
Store boards flat on a ventilated support, off the ground, before installation. Allow an expansion gap of 3 to 5mm between each board for exterior use — wood expands in width according to moisture. Fix with A4 stainless steel or galvanised screws to avoid rust marks on the wood. For vertical cladding, use counter-batten battens to ensure ventilation behind the cladding.
Maintenance and protection
For interior use, apply oil-wax or varnish depending on the application. For use in slightly damp environments (cellar, veranda), a water-repellent treatment is recommended. For exterior use, a class 3 fungicide-insecticide treatment is essential — fir is not naturally resistant to moisture.
WoodUp Tip
For a shelf made from 200mm wide planed fir board, limit the span between supports to 60cm maximum for the 24mm thickness under normal load. Beyond that, double the thickness or move the battens closer together.
Good to know before buying: Planed fir may show slight shrinkage cracks after installation in heated rooms with dry air — this is a natural reaction of solid wood, with no impact on strength.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a rough-sawn board and a planed board?
The rough-sawn board retains the sawn appearance — slightly irregular surface, natural texture, slightly larger dimensions. The planed board has been machined on its faces to achieve a smooth surface and precise dimensions. For visible cladding or a decorative application, planed gives a neater finish. For shuttering or a concealed structure, rough-sawn is sufficient and more economical.
How to avoid shrinkage cracks on untreated boards?
Shrinkage cracks are natural in untreated solid wood — they do not affect the strength of the board. To minimise them, store boards under cover until installation, apply a saturator or oil as soon as they are laid, and avoid alternating exposure to rain and intense sun. On wide boards (200mm), cracks may be more pronounced than on narrow formats.
Can these boards be used for an interior floor?
Yes. The 24mm thickness (planed) is suitable for a floor on joists at 40cm centres. The planed face can be directly oiled or varnished without prior sanding, which makes installation easier.
Should these boards be treated before outdoor installation?
Untreated fir is sensitive to moisture outdoors — a fungicide-insecticide treatment is essential before exterior installation. In dry interiors, no treatment is required.
Can these boards be painted or stained directly?
Yes. Lightly sand the surface (120 grit) before application. For paint, apply a bonding primer suitable for resinous wood. For stain or oil, apply directly to dry wood. Planed wood offers better adhesion than rough-sawn and consumes less product.
