Planed douglas board
Untreated planed solid Douglas board, available in 150x24mm and 200x24mm (thickness 24mm), lengths 200cm and 240cm, sold individually. 4-face smooth finish, class 3: natural durability outdoors with no ground contact, regular surface ready to receive a stain, saturator, or paint without prior sanding. Cladding, decking cladding, interior joinery — the planed Douglas board is easily cut to the dimensions required on site.
Planed Douglas Fir Board – 150x24mm and 200x24mm (24mm thickness), Lengths 200cm and 240cm
This planed solid douglas fir board is a thin, wide piece intended for cladding, formwork, flooring, fencing, and fitting-out work. Delivered untreated, it retains all the natural properties of the wood and is easy to work with a saw, plane, or router. The available dimensions cover common uses in construction and exterior or interior fitting out.
Planing produces a smooth surface and sharp edges on all faces – dimensions are slightly smaller than sawn (24mm planed thickness vs 27mm sawn) due to machining. This finish gives a neater result and makes it easier to install as visible cladding, decking, or joinery. Use: natural durability, exterior above ground contact.

Uses and applications
The 150x24mm format is preferred for classic vertical cladding and slatted fences. The 200x24mm format covers more surface per board – well suited to large façades and decking. The planed surface allows paint, stain, or oil to be applied directly without prior sanding.
Installation tips
Store boards flat on a ventilated support, off the ground, before installation. Allow an expansion gap of 3 to 5mm between each board for exterior use – wood expands in width with moisture. Fix with A4 stainless or galvanised screws to prevent rust marks on the wood. For vertical cladding, use counter-batten battens to ensure ventilation behind the cladding.
Maintenance and protection
Same recommendations as for sawn – saturator or exterior oil applied before installation on all faces, renewed every 2–3 years. Planed surfaces absorb finishing products better and give a more even result. Greying remains natural without protection but is more uniform.
WoodUp Tip
For planed board cladding, apply stain or oil before installation on all faces – including the edges and the back face, which otherwise absorb moisture by capillary action.
What to know before buying: The 24mm thickness is the dimension after planing. For quantity calculations, use the actual usable width (150 or 200mm) and not the sawn width before machining.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a sawn board and a planed board?
The sawn board retains the sawn appearance – slightly irregular surface, natural texture, slightly larger dimensions. The planed board has been machined on its faces to achieve a smooth surface and precise dimensions. For visible cladding or a decorative application, planed gives a neater result. For formwork or a concealed structure, sawn is sufficient and more economical.
How can shrinkage cracks be avoided on untreated boards?
Shrinkage cracks are natural in untreated solid wood – they do not affect the strength of the board. To limit them, store boards under cover until installation, apply a saturator or oil as soon as the boards are laid, and avoid alternating exposure to rain and intense sun. On wide boards (200mm), cracks may be more pronounced than on narrow formats.
Can these boards be used for an indoor floor?
Yes. The 24mm thickness (planed) is suitable for a floor on joists at 40cm centres. The planed face can be oiled or varnished directly without prior sanding, which simplifies installation.
Should these boards be treated before exterior installation?
Untreated douglas fir is naturally durable (class 3) – it is suitable for exterior cladding and fencing without mandatory treatment. To slow greying and shrinkage cracking, apply a UV saturator before installation and renew every 2–3 years. Untreated douglas fir will grey within 6–12 months but retains all its mechanical properties.
Can these boards be painted or stained directly?
Yes. Lightly sand the surface (120 grit) before application. For paint, apply a primer suitable for resinous wood. For stain or oil, apply directly to dry wood. Planed wood offers better adhesion than sawn and uses less product.
