Raw douglas board
Untreated raw solid Douglas board, available in 160x27mm and 210x27mm, lengths 200cm and 240cm, sold individually. Class 3 species with natural durability: suitable for exterior use with no direct ground contact and no mandatory prior treatment — let it age to a natural grey or apply a stain to preserve the colour. Cladding, fencing, formwork, decking — it accepts paint, stain, or oil depending on exposure and the desired finish.
Rough-Sawn Douglas Fir Board - 160x27mm and 210x27mm, Lengths 200cm and 240cm
This rough-sawn solid Douglas fir board is a thin, wide piece intended for cladding, formwork, flooring, fencing and fitting-out work. Delivered untreated, it retains all the natural properties of the timber and can be worked easily with a saw, plane or router. The available dimensions cover the common uses in construction and exterior or interior fitting-out.
Rough-sawn Douglas fir retains its natural sawn appearance — slightly rough texture, characteristic golden-orange colour, distinctive grain. Its natural durability (class 3) makes it suited to exterior cladding, fencing and outdoor installations without mandatory treatment, provided it is not in direct contact with the ground. For use with natural durability, exterior above ground.

Uses and applications
The 160x27mm format is suited to vertical or horizontal cladding, open-slat fencing and boxing. The 210x27mm format covers larger surfaces with fewer joints — faster to install for cladding or garden boxing. Both formats are also suitable for exterior shelving, plant boxes and garden furniture.
Installation advice
Store boards flat on a ventilated support, off the ground, before installation. Allow an expansion gap of 3 to 5mm between each board for outdoor use — timber expands in width according to moisture content. Fix with A4 stainless steel or galvanised screws to prevent rust marks on the timber. For vertical cladding, use counter-batten battens to ensure ventilation behind the cladding.
Maintenance and protection
Apply an exterior wood saturator or UV oil before installation to limit greying and shrinkage cracks. Douglas fir greys naturally within 6–12 months without protection but retains its mechanical properties. Renew the protection every 2–3 years according to exposure. Avoid direct contact with the ground.
WoodUp tip
For horizontal cladding, allow an expansion gap of 3 to 5mm between each board. On a south- or west-facing façade, rough-sawn Douglas fir may develop surface cracks in the first few years — these superficial cracks do not affect its strength.
Before buying: Untreated rough-sawn Douglas fir greys within 6 to 12 months outdoors. This is a natural evolution, not deterioration — the timber retains all its mechanical properties.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a rough-sawn board and a planed board?
The rough-sawn board retains its sawn appearance — slightly irregular surface, natural texture, slightly larger dimensions. The planed board has been machined on its faces to achieve a smooth surface and precise dimensions. For visible cladding or a decorative application, planed gives a neater finish. For formwork or a concealed structure, rough-sawn is sufficient and more economical.
How to prevent shrinkage cracks on untreated boards?
Shrinkage cracks are natural in untreated solid timber — they do not affect the strength of the board. To limit them, store boards under cover until installation, apply a saturator or oil as soon as they are laid, and avoid alternating exposure to rain and intense sun. On wide boards (200mm), cracks may be more pronounced than on narrow formats.
Can these boards be used for an interior floor?
Yes, in a dry interior. For a visible floor, sand the visible face (80 then 120 grit) and apply a floor varnish or parquet oil. The 27mm thickness (rough-sawn) is sufficient for a floor on joists at a maximum 40cm spacing.
Do these boards need to be treated before outdoor installation?
Untreated Douglas fir is naturally durable (class 3) — it is suitable for exterior cladding and fencing without mandatory treatment. To slow greying and shrinkage cracks, apply a UV saturator before installation and renew every 2–3 years. Untreated Douglas fir greys within 6–12 months but retains all its mechanical properties.
Can these boards be painted or stained directly?
Yes. Lightly sand the surface (120 grit) before application. For paint, apply a bonding primer suitable for resinous timber. For stain or oil, apply directly to dry timber. Planed timber offers better adhesion than rough-sawn and requires less product.
