What is a wood joist?
A joist is a solid wood piece with a rectangular cross-section. Wood joists are primarily used as structural timber. Thanks to its strength, the wood joist is used as a framing member in the construction of:
- floor structure;
- upper floor support;
- decking floor structure.
The wood joist is also used as formwork timber. It is also found in roof framing timber or joinery timber (interior fitting, insulation).
How to choose a wood joist for your home?
The choice of a wood joist depends on how you intend to use it. If your joist order is for the construction of a wooden floor, your selection criteria will be linked to the mechanical resistance of the assembly. In all other cases, you can choose joists based on more aesthetic criteria.
Choosing wood joists for floor construction
For the construction of a timber floor frame, the choice of joists involves the calculation of floor joisting charts. This takes into account the floor load (with or without partition walls). The charts determine the joist spacing. It is this spacing that leads to the choice of joist cross-section. Note: include the length of each joist (span) in the equation.
Choosing joists for interior fitting
When the wood joist serves as a non-load-bearing structural element, the choice of joist models is based more on visual criteria (absence of knots, rough or planed finish). In all cases, also consider the use class (or risk class). Class 2 is a minimum for a joist intended for construction.
The wood joist: a product to customise according to the construction
In the field of construction and timber framing, a joist is a thick, resistant plank. The cross-section of a wood joist is smaller than that of a sleeper or a bastaing. Joists are available in various lengths to meet the extremely varied demands of construction. Joists are treated against biological risks and moisture.
Wood species for joists: our choice of Douglas pine
Joists are generally made of fir, spruce or Douglas pine. Softwoods are valued in the construction sector for their mechanical properties. Woodup favours Douglas pine and spruce, in a rough finish. Grade 2 (aesthetic classification) corresponds to joinery and construction use.
Treatment of wood joists
The most common wood joists receive a surface impregnation treatment. The spraying or dipping technique protects joists against wood-boring insects and wood-decay fungi. For joists exposed to high moisture levels, opt for autoclave treatment (higher price).
Wood joist cross-section
The cross-section of joists corresponds to that of a half-bastaing or a bastaing with multiple variations. The aim is to meet the construction constraints of floor joisting. Here are some examples of joist dimensions we offer:
- section 38 × 150 mm;
- section 50 × 150 mm;
- section 38 × 175 mm;
- section 63 × 175 mm.
The wood joist is also available in section 100 × 250, 100 × 280 (large spans).
Wood joist length
The wood joist is a structural element. Like most beams, rafters and planks, joists are available in four main lengths:
- length 3 metres;
- length 4 metres;
- length 5 metres;
- length 6 metres.
Our different wood joist models for your home
Woodup wood joists are available as rough joists and planed joists. The various products are also distinguished by their resistance class (NF EN 338).
- Class C18: timber frame and traditional roofing.
- Class C24: timber frame and industrial roofing.
- Class C30: high-performance construction for floor joisting.
