Douglas fir bracket console for canopy and porch
This solid Douglas fir bracket console is designed to support the structure of a canopy or porch fixed to a façade. Its straight force arm — vertical post, horizontal arm and reinforcing diagonal — takes the purlin loads without requiring a ground post. Unlike fir consoles, Douglas fir does not require mandatory treatment for outdoor use above ground.
Four dimensions are available, from 45x45 to 100x100 cm, for canopy depths of 80 to 140 cm. The wood is supplied raw. Sold individually — a standard structure requires 2 brackets, one on each side.

Installation advice
Fix the brackets to a stable load-bearing wall, identifying solid masonry areas. For concrete or solid blockwork, use heavy-duty expansion anchors of 10 to 12 mm. For a timber frame, 8 mm stainless steel coach screws are suitable. Position both brackets perfectly level before final tightening.
Check the squareness in both planes — horizontal and vertical — before fitting the purlin. A slight misalignment generates stress on the assembly and may cause the wood to crack over time. Pre-drill all screw fixing points. Fitting a pair is estimated to take 2 to 3 hours with two people.
Maintenance and protection
Douglas fir can be left untreated outdoors — it naturally greys over 6 to 12 months without any alteration to its mechanical properties. To preserve the original golden brown hue, apply an exterior wood saturator before installation and renew every 2 to 3 years. An annual rinse with clean water is sufficient for routine maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a bracket and a console for a canopy?
These are two terms for the same type of piece: a wooden bracket fixed to the façade to support the structure of a canopy or porch. The term console is more common in traditional timber framing, while bracket is often used in the context of canopy kits. Both refer to the same product here — a straight Douglas fir force arm fixed to a load-bearing wall.
Does a Douglas fir bracket need to be treated before being installed outdoors?
No, treatment is not mandatory. Douglas fir is naturally resistant to fungi and moisture at use class 3 — it can be installed raw outdoors without direct contact with the ground. Without treatment, it greys over 6 to 12 months. With a saturator applied before fitting and renewed every 2 to 3 years, it retains its natural golden hue.
How many brackets are needed for a canopy?
Two brackets are required for a standard structure, one on each side. For canopies over 3 m in length, a third central bracket can be added. Brackets are sold individually.
What bracket size should I choose for my canopy depth?
The bracket dimension corresponds approximately to the canopy depth: 45x45 cm for 80 cm depth, 60x60 for 100 cm, 80x80 for 120 cm, 100x100 for 140 cm. If in doubt or for heavy roofing (tiles), choose the larger size.
Why choose Douglas fir rather than fir for a canopy bracket?
Douglas fir is naturally more resistant to moisture than fir — it does not require mandatory treatment for outdoor use. It is the recommended choice for façades heavily exposed to bad weather (north-facing façades, Atlantic regions) or for owners who wish to minimise maintenance. Fir remains suitable if it is regularly protected.
Is this bracket compatible with WoodUp canopy kits?
Yes. The Douglas fir brackets are dimensionally compatible with TRUGES and UGLAS kits and WoodUp bespoke canopies. The dimension to choose depends on the depth of the selected kit: 60x60 bracket for 100 cm depth, 80x80 for 120 cm depth. Tiles and roofing materials are not included and must be sourced separately.
