Douglas fir bracket console for canopy and porch

This solid Douglas fir bracket console is designed to support the structure of a canopy or porch fixed to a façade. Its straight force arm — vertical post, horizontal arm and reinforcing diagonal — takes the purlin loads without requiring a ground post. Unlike fir consoles, Douglas fir does not require mandatory treatment for outdoor use above ground.

Four dimensions are available, from 45x45 to 100x100 cm, for canopy depths of 80 to 140 cm. The wood is supplied raw. Sold individually — a standard structure requires 2 brackets, one on each side.

Fix the brackets to a stable load-bearing wall, identifying solid masonry areas. For concrete or solid blockwork, use heavy-duty expansion anchors of 10 to 12 mm. For a timber frame, 8 mm stainless steel coach screws are suitable. Position both brackets perfectly level before final tightening.

Check the squareness in both planes — horizontal and vertical — before fitting the purlin. A slight misalignment generates stress on the assembly and may cause the wood to crack over time. Pre-drill all screw fixing points. Fitting a pair is estimated to take 2 to 3 hours with two people.

Maintenance and protection

Douglas fir can be left untreated outdoors — it naturally greys over 6 to 12 months without any alteration to its mechanical properties. To preserve the original golden brown hue, apply an exterior wood saturator before installation and renew every 2 to 3 years. An annual rinse with clean water is sufficient for routine maintenance.
