Straight bracket timber frame support – Fir kit
This solid fir timber frame bracket is designed to support the structure of a canopy, porch canopy, or roof overhang fixed to a façade. Its straight force arm – comprising a vertical post, a horizontal arm, and a diagonal brace – distributes loads across the load-bearing wall without requiring a ground-level post. It is supplied as an unassembled kit: the pieces are pre-cut and ready to dowel and screw together.
Five dimensions are available, from 45x45 cm to 120x120 cm, to suit canopy depths ranging from 80 cm to over 140 cm. The wood is delivered raw, to be painted or stained before installation. Sold individually – a standard structure requires 2 brackets, one on each side.

Installation advice
Before fixing anything, identify the solid masonry zones on the façade – lintel, ring beam, or concrete wall. Avoid mortar joints and hollow bricks for the main load points. Use stainless steel coach screws 8 to 10 mm in diameter on timber frame, or heavy-duty expansion wall plugs on concrete or solid blockwork.
Fix both brackets perfectly level and at the same height before fully tightening the fixings. Even a small misalignment causes twisting in the purlin and weakens the whole structure. Pre-drill all pieces in the kit before assembly to avoid splitting the fir. Fitting the pair of brackets takes approximately 2 to 3 hours for two people.
Apply the protection (stain, saturator, or paint) to all faces of the pieces before assembly, including the notches and contact surfaces – these areas are the most exposed to moisture once the kit is assembled.
Maintenance and protection
Raw fir used outdoors must be protected before installation. Apply a microporous wood stain or an exterior wood saturator in a minimum of two coats, on all faces. Renew the protection every 2 to 3 years, paying particular attention to areas in contact with masonry and joints. An annual clean with clear water is sufficient for routine maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
How many brackets are needed for a porch canopy?
A standard structure requires 2 brackets: one on each side of the porch canopy or canopy. For very long structures (over 3 m), an intermediate bracket can be added to limit deflection of the purlin. Brackets are sold individually.
What bracket size should I choose for my canopy?
The bracket dimension corresponds to the canopy depth: a 60x60 cm bracket suits a depth of 100 cm, an 80x80 suits 120 cm, a 100x100 suits 140 cm. For depths greater than 140 cm, use the 120x120. If in doubt or for a heavy roof covering (tiles), choose the next size up.
How do you assemble the timber frame bracket kit?
The pieces are pre-cut and delivered with wooden dowels for assembly. Dry-fit first to check squareness, then optional gluing before dowelling. Wall fixing hardware is to be sourced separately depending on your substrate. No specialist tools are required: a drill, saw, and mallet are sufficient.
Can this bracket be painted to blend with the façade?
Yes. The wood is delivered raw, without primer. All finishes are possible: opaque paint, tinted stain, oil, or saturator. Apply the protection before installation on all faces, paying particular attention to the assembly notches. For opaque paint, a bonding primer is recommended on raw fir.
Does this bracket support a tile roof covering?
The bracket alone does not directly bear the tiles – it supports the purlin, which in turn bears the rafters and the roof covering. Sizing depends on the total weight of the roof covering and the length of the purlin. For a standard mechanical tile covering on a porch canopy 200 cm wide, the 80x80 or 100x100 bracket is generally appropriate. Tiles are not supplied with the brackets.
Why choose a wooden bracket rather than a metal bracket?
A timber frame bracket blends visually with wooden structures and traditional façades. It can be painted or stained in the desired shade, with no contrast effect against other wooden elements on the façade. Structurally, solid fir offers sufficient mechanical strength for the typical loads of a residential canopy.
