Curved bracket timber frame support – Fir kit

This curved force arm timber frame bracket is designed to support wooden porch canopies and canopies whose aesthetic falls within a traditional or rustic style. The curve of the force arm – cut from solid fir – gives a distinct profile compared to the straight model, often chosen for stone façades, character homes, or projects with traditional tiles.

The kit includes all pre-cut pieces: vertical post, curved horizontal arm, diagonal brace, and wooden dowels. Two dimensions are available: 60x60 cm for canopy depths up to 100 cm, and 80x80 cm for depths up to 120 cm. The wood is delivered raw, to be painted or stained. Sold individually – allow 2 brackets per structure.

Installation advice

Installation is identical to the straight model: fixing to a load-bearing wall, plumb, with stainless steel coach screws on timber frame or expansion wall plugs on concrete or solid blockwork. Fix both brackets at the same height before final tightening. The curved profile does not affect the wall fixing method – only the visual appearance differs.

Pre-drill all pieces before assembly. Apply the protection (stain or saturator) to all faces before assembly, paying particular attention to the curved diagonal whose exposed surface area is greater than on the straight model. Estimated assembly time: 2 to 3 hours for a pair, with two people.

Maintenance and protection

Same rule as for the straight model: microporous wood stain or exterior wood saturator in a minimum of two coats, before installation. Renew every 2 to 3 years. The curved diagonal, due to its geometry, may retain moisture on its underside – check its condition at each maintenance and re-treat if necessary.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a straight and a curved force arm?

Both models have the same structural function and equivalent dimensions. The difference is purely aesthetic: the straight arm gives a clean, contemporary line, while the curved arm brings a traditional curved profile. The choice depends on the architecture of the façade and the style of the porch canopy. Both are installed in the same way.

How many curved brackets are needed for a porch canopy?

Two brackets are required for a standard structure, one on each side. For porch canopies over 3 m in length, a third central bracket can be added to limit deflection of the purlin. Brackets are sold individually.

Is the curved bracket suitable for a porch canopy with a tile roof covering?

Yes. The 80x80 bracket is sized to support the loads of a mechanical tile covering on a porch canopy of standard width (150 to 250 cm). The bracket does not directly bear the tiles – it supports the purlin, which bears the rafters and the roof covering. For heavy tiles (old terracotta), prefer the 80x80 bracket even for depths of 100 cm. Tiles are not supplied with the brackets.

How do I choose between the 60x60 and 80x80 bracket?

The 60x60 is suited to canopies with a depth of 100 cm and a lightweight roof covering (polycarbonate, zinc, fibre cement slates). The 80x80 is recommended for depths of 120 cm or for any mechanical tile covering, regardless of depth. If in doubt, choose the larger size.

Can the curved bracket be painted in a specific colour?

Yes. The wood is delivered raw. Paint, tinted stain, or saturator are all applicable. The larger curved surface requires slightly more product than the straight model. Apply before installation on all faces, including the assembly notches.

What is the lifespan of a treated fir timber frame bracket?

With a stain or saturator renewed every 2 to 3 years, and installation under a roof covering (thus protected from direct rain on the upper face), a treated fir bracket can last 15 to 20 years. The curved diagonal is the piece to inspect first during annual maintenance.
