AB: Closed-joint surface, a few lightly marked growth rings, sound knots and isolated small black knots tolerated, isolated areas of reaction wood and small areas of pith possible, slight colour differences accepted, shallow end splits (shakes), plugged knots and resin pockets permitted over a larger area, some traces of sapwood allowed (on pine, larch, and douglas fir), overall homogeneous appearance.
B: Closed-joint surface, marked and pronounced wood grain, larger knots and resin pockets accepted, plugged knots and resin pockets permitted in large quantities, slight reaction wood, small discolourations, pith and sapwood (on larch, pine, douglas fir, and arolla pine) tolerated.
