What is a timber board?
A timber board is a longitudinal product of low thickness. Of variable length (one metre to several metres), the timber board is used in fitting-out and construction. Rough-sawn or planed, timber boards are also used in joinery work (building tables, staircases).
How to choose a timber board?
Choose your timber board according to its intended use. For interior use, use class 2 is suitable. If the timber board is to be exposed to rain, opt for class 3 as a minimum. The choice of wood species is also crucial. For reference, Douglas pine is the most produced timber in France. It has ideal mechanical properties for building structural frameworks and interior fittings.
Technical characteristics of timber boards
According to standard NF B50-002, the width of a timber board must be at least 4 times its thickness. A timber board is a piece whose dimensions are greater than sarking boards and less than or equal to floor joists. The length of a timber board is more flexible, as are the wood species available.
Thickness of construction timber boards
The thickness of a construction timber board varies depending on the model from 22 to 55 mm. It is possible to combine boards of different thicknesses on the same project. The thickness of a timber board determines its mechanical strength.
Width of timber boards
Timber boards have a width of 70 to 230 mm. The wider the board, the greater the risk of warping. Depending on your DIY or construction project, opt for a maximum width of 200 to 210 mm. This will limit the expansion of the wood caused by temperature variations.
Timber board species: what does Woodup offer?
Solid timber boards are available in softwood. Spruce, Douglas pine, larch, maritime pine and Scots pine are used in construction. For a DIY project (furniture, table, staircase), hardwood boards are an alternative. Oak, ash, beech and bamboo boards exist, but the price is higher. We have chosen Douglas pine for timber boards with an ideal quality-to-price ratio.
