Moulded fir handrail 56x45 mm — sold alone, without supports
This handrail in solid moulded fir features a 56x45 mm section and a 21x5 mm groove for fixing onto standard wall supports. It is sold without brackets or fixings, allowing it to be paired with supports of your choice or to complete an existing installation.
The 56x45 mm profile offers a wide and stable grip, well suited to daily use on a staircase or corridor. The moulded section softens the edges and improves contact with the palm. Restricted to indoor use only: untreated fir cannot withstand exposure to outdoor moisture.
Four lengths are available: 150, 200, 250 and 300 cm. For staircases with a developed length exceeding 300 cm, refer to the version with brackets (lengths up to 420 cm) or plan for a join.

Installation advice
Before installation, check that your supports are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove. Position the supports at regular intervals with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two fixing points. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor level.
Slide the groove onto the support heads, then tighten the retaining screws without forcing — as fir is a softwood, over-tightening will mark the wood. If cutting is required, fir saws easily with a circular saw or handsaw. Sand the cut edge with 120-grit paper before applying the finish.
It is recommended to apply the chosen finish before installation, while the piece is still accessible on all its faces.
Maintenance and protection
Supplied raw, this profile must be treated before use. The most common finishing options:
- Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, high resistance to friction, durability 5 to 7 years
- Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt finish, maintenance every 2 to 3 years
- Interior wood paint: after a pore-filling primer, for a coloured finish
For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid household products containing solvents or abrasive agents. Refreshing the finish every 5 to 7 years (varnish) or 2 to 3 years (oil) maintains effective protection of the wood.
WoodUp tip
Before purchasing: the 56x45 mm profile is slightly wider than the standard 50x50 mm — check compatibility with your existing supports. 21x5 mm groove compatible with WoodUp groove-fit supports. Raw fir must be treated before installation on all faces, including inside the groove. Wall fixings not included. Indoor use only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between this item and the version with brackets (ID 158)?
This handrail is sold alone, without fixing brackets. It is suitable for customers who already have supports installed or who wish to choose their own brackets. The version with brackets includes 2 to 4 supports depending on the length chosen and covers lengths up to 420 cm, compared to a maximum of 300 cm here.
Which supports should I order for this handrail?
Compatible supports are standard lug wall brackets with a 21 mm width and 5 mm thickness. Woodup offers supports in black lacquered steel and in a two-tone finish, available separately. Allow one support every 60 to 80 cm for a secure fixing.
Can this handrail be used outdoors under a shelter?
No. Fir is a wood classified for indoor use only. Even under a shelter, variations in humidity and condensation can cause swelling, cracking and rapid deterioration of the wood. For outdoor use, opt for a handrail in douglas fir or exotic hardwood.
How do I calculate the handrail length needed for my staircase?
Measure the developed length of your staircase following the slope of the stringers, from bottom to top. Add 10 to 15 cm of overhang at the bottom and top if the configuration allows. For a straight staircase with 12 steps, a 25 cm tread depth and a 20 cm step height, the developed length is approximately 320 cm — the 300 cm length will be suitable if a short overhang is sufficient.
Does fir mark easily with use?
Yes, it is a softwood (density ~450 kg/m³) that may show marks under heavy use or repeated impacts. A polyurethane varnish finish significantly limits surface wear. For a heavily used staircase, beech or oak offer noticeably superior resistance to daily abrasion.
Why choose a 56x45 mm profile rather than a 50x50 mm?
The 56x45 mm is slightly wider (56 mm) but shorter in height (45 mm), giving a flatter profile, often perceived as more comfortable for a hand sliding along the staircase. The 50x50 mm is more symmetrical, suited to configurations where the handrail is also used as a lateral support. Both sections are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove.
