Moulded fir handrail 56x45 mm — sold alone, without brackets
This handrail in solid moulded fir features a 56x45 mm section and a 21x5 mm groove for fixing to standard wall brackets. It is sold without mounting plates or fixings, allowing it to be paired with brackets of your choice or to complete an existing installation.
The 56x45 mm profile offers a wide, stable grip, well suited to everyday use on a staircase or in a hallway. The moulded section softens the edges and improves contact with the palm. Interior use only: untreated fir cannot withstand exposure to outdoor moisture.
Four lengths are available: 150, 200, 250 and 295 cm. For staircases whose run exceeds 300 cm, refer to the version with mounting plates (lengths up to 420 cm) or plan a join.

Installation advice
Before fitting, check that your brackets are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove. Position the brackets at regular intervals with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor.
Engage the groove into the bracket heads then tighten the retaining screws without forcing — as fir is a softwood, overtightening will mark the wood. If cutting is required, fir saws easily with a circular saw or handsaw. Sand the cut edge with 120-grit paper before applying the finish.
It is recommended to apply the chosen finish before fitting, while the piece is still accessible on all its faces.
Maintenance and protection
Supplied raw, this profile must be treated before use. The most common finishing options are:
- Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, high resistance to friction, durability 5 to 7 years
- Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance, maintenance every 2 to 3 years
- Interior wood paint: after applying a grain-filler primer, for a coloured finish
For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid household products containing solvents or abrasive agents. Refreshing the finish every 5 to 7 years (varnish) or 2 to 3 years (oil) maintains effective protection of the wood.
WoodUp Tip
Before buying: the 56x45 mm profile is slightly wider than the standard 50x50 mm — check compatibility with your existing brackets. 21x5 mm groove compatible with WoodUp groove-type brackets. Raw fir to be treated before fitting on all faces, including inside the groove. Wall fixings not included. Interior use only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between this item and the version with mounting plates (ID 158)?
This handrail is sold alone, without mounting plates. It is suitable for customers who already have brackets installed or who wish to choose their own mounting plates. The version with mounting plates includes 2 to 4 brackets depending on the length chosen and covers lengths up to 420 cm, compared with a maximum of 300 cm here.
Which brackets should I order for this handrail?
Compatible brackets are standard wall mounting plates with a lug of 21 mm width and 5 mm thickness. WoodUp offers brackets in black lacquered steel and in a two-tone finish, available separately. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for secure fixing.
Can this handrail be used outdoors under a shelter?
No. Fir is a timber classified for interior use only. Even under a shelter, variations in humidity and condensation can cause swelling, cracking and rapid deterioration of the wood. For outdoor use, opt for a handrail in douglas fir or hardwood.
How do I calculate the handrail length I need for my staircase?
Measure the developed length of your staircase by following the slope of the stringers from bottom to top. Add 10 to 15 cm of overhang at the bottom and top if the configuration allows. For a straight staircase of 12 steps with a tread depth of 25 cm and a riser height of 20 cm, the run is approximately 320 cm — the 295 cm length will be suitable if a short overhang is sufficient.
Does fir mark easily with use?
Yes, it is a softwood (density ~450 kg/m³) that may show marks under heavy use or repeated impacts. A polyurethane varnish finish significantly limits surface wear. For a heavily used staircase, beech or oak offer considerably greater resistance to everyday abrasion.
Why choose a 56x45 mm profile rather than 50x50 mm?
The 56x45 mm is slightly wider (56 mm) but shallower (45 mm), giving a flatter profile, often perceived as more comfortable for a hand sliding along the staircase. The 50x50 mm is more symmetrical and suited to configurations where the handrail is also used as a lateral support. Both sections are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove.
