This glued-laminated beech balustrade kit covers a 2-metre run and has a total height of 1 metre, complying with indoor landing balustrade standards (NF P01-012). Glued-laminated beech offers better dimensional stability than solid beech: the wood strips are assembled in crosswise layers, reducing shrinkage and warping indoors. A balustrade is also known as a guardrail.

The kit contains everything needed for installation: 2 posts measuring 70x70 mm with their floor mounting supports included, a 50x50 mm handrail, a bottom rail, 10 spindles measuring 65x20 mm and assembly fixings. Only the floor fixings are not supplied, as these depend on the surface material (wood, concrete or tiles). The beech is supplied unfinished and untreated: apply a protective finish before use to protect the wood from contact and ambient moisture.

This product is designed exclusively for indoor use. Glued-laminated beech is sensitive to moisture and deteriorates quickly when exposed outdoors without protection.

Beech range: this kit is part of the glued-laminated beech balustrade range (70 x 70 mm post, 50 x 50 mm handrail, 65 x 20 mm spindles). It cannot be combined with fir balustrade kits, which have different component sizes (60 x 60 mm post, 60 x 50 mm top rail, 50 x 20 mm spindles). Use the same range throughout the installation.

Installation advice

Preparation: Check that the surface is dry, level and stable. For installation on concrete, use expansion anchors suited to the weight of the balustrade. On a wooden floor, long wood screws (≥ 60 mm) are sufficient.

Assembly: Assemble the balustrade flat before positioning it. Follow this order: bottom rail → spindles → handrail → posts. Pre-drilled holes make alignment easier. Check that the posts are vertical with a spirit level before tightening.

Floor fixing: Secure the post supports to the floor with fixings suited to the surface. Tighten them gradually to avoid cracking the supports. Floor fixings are not supplied; use stainless steel screws or anchors according to the material.

Finish: Apply a protective finish (floor varnish or hardwax oil) before use. Glued-laminated beech takes paint and varnish very well. Avoid products containing strong solvents in enclosed spaces.

Care and protection

Glued-laminated beech used in a dry indoor setting is durable if protected. Without a finish, it is susceptible to stains and ambient moisture. Once varnished or oiled, cleaning with soapy water twice a year is sufficient. If using floor varnish, apply a light fresh coat every 5 to 7 years, depending on the level of use. Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture or condensation.

WoodUp tip

Before you buy: glued-laminated beech is more stable than fir but more sensitive to changes in humidity in poorly heated interiors. You must apply a finish (stair varnish, hardwax oil or varnish) before assembly: the grooves and joints will be inaccessible once the kit is assembled. Frequently asked questions

Can this beech balustrade be used outdoors if treated?

No. Even if treated, glued-laminated beech is not suitable for permanent outdoor exposure. Prolonged moisture causes the glued layers to separate. Outdoors, use species rated for use class 3b or 4 (Douglas fir, larch or robinia), or choose WoodUp’s Quadrum or Ellipsis aluminium ranges.

Which fixings should I use to secure the supports to a concrete floor?

On concrete, use Ø8 mm expansion anchors at a minimum, or chemical anchors for thick substrates. Choose stainless steel fixings to prevent rust. For a wooden floor, long wood screws (≥ 60 mm) with a diameter of Ø5 mm are sufficient.

Can this kit be extended to cover a run longer than 2 m?

Yes. Combine it with the 1 m + 1 post kit or other 2 m kits. Space the posts no more than 1.5 m apart. For a 3 m run, combine a 2 m + 2 posts kit with a 1 m + 1 post kit. A consistent appearance is possible if the components come from the same WoodUp beech range.

Which finish should I use for a beech mezzanine balustrade?

For a heavily used mezzanine, 2–3 coats of stair varnish are the most durable option, offering resistance to knocks and abrasion. Hardwax oil is ideal for a warm, natural look but needs reapplying every 2 years. Beech also takes white paint or tinted wood stain very well, allowing it to blend with your décor.
