This glued-laminated beech balustrade kit covers a 1 metre span and has a finished height of 1 metre, complying with the NF P01-012 standard for indoor landing balustrades. It comes with just one post, making it suitable where the other end is fixed to a wall, stair stringer or existing balustrade. It is a common solution for mezzanine corners, the start of a staircase or small 1-metre landings. A balustrade is also called a guardrail.

Glued-laminated beech has an even surface and a characteristic fine grain that is easy to paint, oil or varnish. Its cross-layered construction gives it better dimensional stability than solid beech, helping to limit shrinkage indoors. The kit is supplied unfinished and untreated: apply a protective finish before use to protect the wood from contact and ambient humidity.

The kit includes all the infill and structural components except the floor fixings, which are not supplied because they depend on the substrate material (concrete, wood or tiles).

Beech range: this kit is part of the glued-laminated beech balustrade range (70 x 70 mm post, 50 x 50 mm handrail, 65 x 20 mm spindles). It cannot be combined with the fir balustrade kits, which have different component sizes (60 x 60 mm post, 60 x 50 mm handrail, 50 x 20 mm spindles). Use one range throughout the installation.

Installation advice

Preparation: Check that the mounting surface is dry, level and structurally sound. The post supplied with this kit is 107 cm high with a 70x70 mm section – allow enough clearance at the base of the post for the fixing bracket. You will need a drill, spirit level and screwdriver.

Assembly: Assemble the balustrade flat before raising it into position. Fit the bottom rail first, insert the spindles, then attach the handrail. Check that the spacing between spindles does not exceed 11 cm anywhere along its length. Then secure the post using the included bracket, checking that it is vertical with a spirit level before fully tightening the fixings.

Floor fixing: Choose fixings to suit the substrate. On concrete: expansion anchors Ø8 mm minimum. On timber floors: long wood screws Ø5 mm (≥ 60 mm). On tiles: drill with a ceramic drill bit, then fit a nylon plug. Floor fixings are not supplied – buy them before installation day.

Finishing: Apply a protective finish after assembly: floor lacquer (2–3 coats) for high-use areas, or hardwax oil for a natural matt look. Unfinished glued-laminated beech also takes white paint or tinted wood stain very well.

Care and protection

In dry indoor conditions, glued-laminated beech is stable and needs little maintenance once protected. Without a finish, it stains and reacts to ambient humidity. After applying floor lacquer or hardwax oil, cleaning with soapy water twice a year is sufficient. Reapply a light coat of floor lacquer every 5 to 7 years, depending on foot traffic. Check the tightness of the fixings once a year. Never expose this product to outdoor conditions or repeated condensation – prolonged exposure to moisture can cause the glued layers to separate.

Is this 1 m + 1 post kit compatible with the WoodUp 2 m beech kit?

Yes. The handrail (50x50 mm) and bottom rail (50x35 mm) have the same dimensions throughout the WoodUp beech range. The two kits can be joined end to end with wooden dowels or metal brackets. The joint is invisible if the components come from the same range. For a 3 m span, combine this 1 m kit with a 2 m + 1 post kit (2 m beech balustrade kit + 2 posts or 900).

Why does the kit include only one post?

This model is designed for installations where one end of the balustrade is supported by a wall, stair stringer or existing post. If you need two posts for a freestanding span without support at either end, choose the 1 m + 2 posts kit 1 m beech balustrade kit + 2 posts, which includes both posts and their brackets.

What fixings are needed for a concrete floor?

Use Ø8 mm expansion anchors with M6 or M8 stainless steel screws. For standard-quality concrete (C20/25), four fixing points per bracket are sufficient. On hollow concrete or lightweight slabs, use chemical anchors for better pull-out resistance. Stainless steel fixings prevent rust marks on light-coloured floors.

Can glued-laminated beech be painted white?

Yes – it is one of the most popular finishes for this wood. Lightly sand with 150-grit abrasive, apply an adhesion primer, then two coats of satin or matt acrylic paint. Beech’s fine grain gives a clean, even result. For a durable white finish in a high-traffic area, choose an alkyd paint or polyurethane lacquer.

Does this beech balustrade meet the standards for a mezzanine?

Yes. The 1 metre height complies with French regulations for landing balustrades (NF P01-012, Article 4). The spacing between spindles stays within the 11 cm maximum.
