Flat fir handrail – Natural simplicity and functionality

The flat solid fir handrail is a finishing element designed for staircases, balustrades or interior corridors. It provides both safety for movement and aesthetic continuity with existing timber work. Its ergonomic flat section ensures a comfortable and stable grip. Fir, a soft and easy-to-machine species, allows quick adaptation to different types of wall-mounted or raking brackets. This product is supplied raw, ready to be painted, varnished or stained according to the desired finish.

Technical details

  • Natural finish: light-coloured, fine-grained timber allowing even application of finishing products.
  • Light and stable species: fir offers a good compromise between rigidity and ease of installation.
  • Universal fixing: groove compatible with the majority of standard brackets on the market.
  • Simple assembly: quick installation using wall-mounted or raking brackets (accessories available separately).
  • Customisation: the raw timber can be stained, varnished or painted to match the rest of the staircase or balustrade.
  • Versatile application: suitable for straight staircases, turning staircases, landings or interior corridors.

Fitting and maintenance recommendations

  1. Positioning: place the wall brackets at regular intervals (approximately one bracket every 80 cm for optimum rigidity).
  2. Fixing: anchor the brackets into the wall using plugs suited to the substrate (timber, plaster, concrete, etc.), then screw the handrail into the brackets (fixings not included).
  3. Cutting: when adjusting, use a fine-toothed saw to avoid splintering the timber.
  4. Finish: apply a wood protection product (varnish, oil or stain) to improve resistance to wear and ambient moisture.
  5. Maintenance: dust regularly, do not clean with large amounts of water. Periodically check the fixings of the brackets.

Frequently asked questions about the flat fir handrail

1. Is the flat fir handrail suitable for outdoor use?
No. Fir is a softwood species intended for interior use. Prolonged exposure to moisture or temperature variations may cause warping. For outdoor use, it is recommended to use a rot-resistant species (oak, black locust, tropical timber) or a metal handrail.
2. What finish should be applied to a raw fir handrail?
A protective finish is essential: varnish, stain or oil for interior timber. These products limit moisture penetration and facilitate maintenance. Apply two thin coats to sanded timber, with a light sanding between coats.
3. How to fix the flat handrail to the wall?
Fixing is carried out using wall brackets compatible with the 19 × 5 mm groove. The brackets are fixed to the wall using plugs suited to the material (timber, plaster, concrete, etc.), then the handrail is screwed into the brackets.
4. Can the handrail be cut to the desired length?
Yes. Standard lengths (150 to 300 cm) can be cut using a fine-toothed saw to obtain a clean cut. It is advisable to lightly sand the ends after cutting.
5. What is the recommended distance between two brackets?
The recommended distance is approximately 80 cm between two fixing points. This spacing ensures good rigidity and limits the flex of the handrail during use.
6. Should the handrail be treated before fitting?
Yes, it is preferable to apply a first coat of finish before fitting to protect areas that will be inaccessible once the handrail is installed. A second coat can be applied after fitting.
