Installation advice
Calculating the number of balusters: For a 1 metre span with 11 cm gaps between 42 mm balusters: 1000 ÷ (42 + 110) = 6.5 → 6 balusters. Check the actual spacing: (1000 - 6x42) ÷ 7 gaps = 106 mm - compliant with the ≤ 11 cm limit.
Installation: Insert the balusters into the groove in the bottom rail (minimum depth 15 mm). Space them evenly before fixing the handrail. For balustrades without a groove, fix them discreetly with screws through the bottom rail and handrail. Apply the finish before installation to cover the recessed areas of the turned profile easily.
Finishing the turned profile: The recessed areas need particular attention. A fine brush lets you cover the grooves without leaving marks. Two coats of hardwax oil or floor varnish, applied with a brush before installation, provide even protection across all surfaces.
Care and protection
Turned profiles collect dust in their grooves. Cleaning them annually with soapy water and a soft brush is enough to keep them clean. Floor varnish offers the best resistance to knocks and scratches on a busy staircase. Hardwax oil is easy to reapply but needs more maintenance. Avoid strong household detergents, which could dull the finish.
WoodUp advice
Before you buy: the turned baluster is the visual centrepiece of a classic balustrade, its profile catching the light differently from each viewing angle. For an even look, order all the balusters in the same wood species and, if possible, from the same batch, as natural shades vary between supplies. A maximum gap of 11 cm between balusters is mandatory under NF P01-012. Apply the finish before fitting the balusters to protect the grooves of the turned profile, which a brush cannot reach once they are in place.
Frequently asked questions
How many turned balusters are needed for 2 metres of balustrade with 11 cm spacing?
For 2 metres with 42 mm balusters at 11 cm spacing: 2000 ÷ (42 + 110) = 13.1 → rounded to 13 balusters. Check: (2000 - 13x42) ÷ 14 gaps = 104 mm - compliant with the ≤ 11 cm limit. Always order 1 or 2 extra to allow for any offcuts.
Is the turned baluster compatible with WoodUp grooved bottom rails?
Yes. The 42 mm section of the turned balusters fits into the 18x15 mm grooves of the bottom rails Solid wood bottom rail. The 18 mm-wide groove allows the baluster to be inserted easily, with a little play for centring. For a secure fit, apply a bead of wood glue in the groove before final insertion.
Can turned balusters and straight spindles be mixed in the same balustrade?
Stylistically, the mix creates a contrast between the shaped profile and straight lines. The unexpected result can be an intentional design choice. Technically, both fit into the same grooved bottom rails. Just check that the gap between each element, whether turned or straight, remains ≤ 11 cm.
Can turned beech be given a gloss varnish finish for a period-style staircase?
Yes. Fine-grained beech takes gloss varnish or gloss lacquer very well for a classic interior style. Apply at least 3 coats, sanding lightly between coats with 400-grit abrasive paper. Beech produces a particularly even, rich result: its close grain, without visible knots, suits gloss finishes well.
Can the turned baluster be used outdoors on a covered terrace?
No. This baluster is for indoor use only, whichever wood you choose (fir, pine or beech). For an outdoor balustrade, consider the WoodUp aluminium range, designed for both indoor and outdoor use.
