Round douglas fir handrail Ø42 mm – class 3, indoor and sheltered outdoor
This round handrail in solid douglas fir Ø42 mm is one of the few species in the range that can be used both indoors and in sheltered outdoor settings. Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is a class 3 softwood without treatment: its natural tannins give it sufficient resistance to fungi and wood-boring insects for use in semi-sheltered environments (canopy, pergola, covered gallery). In fully exposed outdoor settings subject to direct rainfall, a protective finish is essential.
The cylindrical profile of 42 mm in diameter provides a continuous, regular grip along the entire length. Douglas fir is a wood of moderate density (~530 kg/m³), lighter than oak or beech, which makes handling and installation easier. Its warm natural tone – light reddish-brown with a pronounced grain – suits both contemporary interiors and outdoor timber installations.
Three lengths are available: 200, 250 and 300 cm. Fixing brackets must be ordered separately – they must be suitable for a round Ø42 mm profile. The wood is supplied raw and can be trimmed to the exact desired length.

Key points
- ✓ Natural class 3: resistance to fungi and insects without preservative treatment – suitable for sheltered outdoor use
- ✓ Dual use: equally suited to an interior staircase and a terrace or covered pergola balustrade
- ✓ Round profile Ø42 mm: continuous cylindrical grip, smooth sliding along the entire length
- ✓ Lightweight timber (~530 kg/m³): easy to handle and install, trimmable on site
- ✓ Natural tone: light reddish-brown with a pronounced grain, enhanced by an oil or transparent stain
Installation advice
Select brackets suitable for a Ø42 mm round profile – collars or retaining stirrups, different from the groove brackets used for moulded profiles. Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor.
For outdoor use, always use minimum A2 stainless steel fixings to prevent rust runs on the wood. Apply the chosen finish preferably before installation, while the piece is still accessible on all its faces. If cutting is required, sand the cut edge with 120-grit paper and immediately apply a coat of finish to the cut – bare wood is the most vulnerable area.
Maintenance and protection
Indoors, douglas fir performs well without a finish, but a surface treatment improves resistance to soiling. In sheltered outdoor settings, a finish is strongly recommended to limit greying and extend service life. Options depending on use:
- Outdoor wood oil: penetrates deeply, nourishes the wood, natural finish, renewal every 1 to 2 years
- Outdoor stain: light film-forming protection, tinting possible, durability 2 to 4 years depending on exposure
- Outdoor varnish: thicker protective film, durability 3 to 5 years, requires complete stripping before renewal
Without a finish, douglas fir naturally greys within 6 to 12 months – a purely aesthetic phenomenon that does not affect its mechanical properties or weather resistance. An annual clean with clear water is sufficient for routine maintenance in sheltered outdoor settings.
WoodUp tip
What to know before buying: douglas fir is one of the few species in the range suitable for sheltered outdoor use (class 3). Treat with a class 3 oil or stain before installation. Round Ø42 mm profile: cradle brackets required. Wall fixings not included — stainless steel screws for outdoor use. Indoors, a decorative finish is sufficient.
Frequently asked questions
Can douglas fir really be used outdoors without treatment?
In sheltered outdoor settings (under a canopy, covered pergola, gallery), yes – class 3 douglas fir naturally resists fungi and insects thanks to its tannins. However, for direct exposure to rain or permanent contact with moisture, a protective finish (outdoor oil or stain) is essential to prevent rapid greying and surface cracking.
What fixings should be used for a douglas fir handrail outdoors?
Always use minimum A2 stainless steel fixings (or A4 in marine environments). Ordinary galvanised steel screws corrode rapidly when in contact with moisture and the acidic tannins of douglas fir, leaving unsightly and irreversible rust runs on the wood.
What brackets are needed for a round Ø42 mm handrail?
Brackets must be suitable for a round profile – Ø42 mm collars or retaining stirrups, different from groove brackets. Woodup offers round handrail brackets compatible with this diameter, available separately. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for secure fixing.
What is the difference between douglas fir and fir for an outdoor handrail?
Douglas fir (class 3) naturally resists fungi and insects without preservative treatment. Fir (class 1–2) is an exclusively indoor wood – without specific treatment, it degrades rapidly outdoors. For any outdoor use, even sheltered, douglas fir is therefore the appropriate choice among the softwoods in the range.
Can this handrail be trimmed to an intermediate length?
Yes. Douglas fir is easily cut with a circular saw or mitre saw. After cutting, sand the cut edge with 120-grit paper, then immediately apply a coat of finish to the cut – bare ends are the areas most exposed to moisture and should be treated as a priority.
Does douglas fir grey outdoors?
Yes, without a finish, douglas fir naturally greys within 6 to 12 months of outdoor exposure. This greying is purely aesthetic – it does not affect the strength or resistance of the wood. To preserve the original reddish-brown tone, apply an oil or UV stain every 1 to 2 years depending on exposure.
