Round beech handrail Ø42 mm
Round handrail in solid glulam beech Ø42 mm, cylindrical profile with continuous and consistent grip. Hard and stable wood (~720 kg/m³), suitable for staircases subject to heavy daily use. Available in 3 lengths: 195 cm, 250 cm, 295 cm. Supplied raw, to be varnished, oiled or lacquered before use. Indoor use only. Round Ø42 mm profile brackets and fixings to be ordered separately. Pre-drilling recommended before screwing into beech to avoid splitting.
Ø42 mm round laminated beech handrail, for indoor use
This round handrail in solid laminated beech has a cylindrical profile 42 mm in diameter, providing a consistent grip along its full length. Beech is a hardwood (~720 kg/m³) and is considerably more resistant to abrasion than softwoods such as fir or pine. It is suitable for stairs that see heavy daily use.
Laminated construction provides greater dimensional stability than untreated solid wood: the strips are glued with alternating grain directions, limiting movement caused by changes in ambient humidity. For a handrail exposed to seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, this means less risk of warping or cracking. For indoor use only.
Three lengths are available: 195, 250 and 295 cm. The profile is supplied unfinished and must be treated before use. Mounting brackets must be ordered separately – they need to suit a Ø42 mm round profile (collars or cradles, not grooved brackets).

Key points
- ? Hardwood (~720 kg/m³): greater resistance to abrasion and impact than softwoods – suitable for stairs used regularly every day
- ? Ø42 mm round profile: a continuous cylindrical grip that lets the hand slide smoothly along the full length
- ? Laminated wood: more dimensionally stable than untreated solid wood and less affected by changes in ambient humidity
- ? Unfinished wood, ready for finishing: can be varnished, oiled or coated with stair varnish to achieve the desired look
- ? 3 lengths available: 195, 250 and 300 cm for typical straight staircases
Installation advice
Choose brackets suited to a Ø42 mm round profile – retaining collars or cradles, rather than the grooved brackets used for moulded profiles. Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between supports. Three brackets are enough for 200 cm; allow four for 300 cm.
Install the handrail at a height of 80 to 100 cm above the stair nosings or finished floor. As beech is a hardwood, always pre-drill before inserting screws to prevent splitting. Ideally, apply the finish before installation, while all surfaces are still accessible.
Care and protection
Unfinished beech must be treated before use. Recommended finishes depend on how it will be used:
- Stair varnish: 2 to 3 coats, a hard film, maximum resistance to rubbing, lasts 5 to 7 years
- Polyurethane varnish: good resistance, gloss or satin finish, lasts 4 to 6 years
- Interior hardwax oil: natural matt appearance, reapply every 1 to 2 years
For routine cleaning, a slightly damp cloth is enough. Avoid abrasive or acidic products. After several years of use, lightly sanding a varnished surface with fine-grit sandpaper and applying a fresh coat is enough to renew its protection.
WoodUp tip
Before you buy: the Ø42 mm round profile requires cradle-style brackets and is not compatible with grooved brackets. Solid beech is sensitive to moisture: treat all surfaces before installation, paying particular attention to cut ends. Always pre-drill before inserting screws. Wall fixings are not supplied. Indoor use only.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose beech rather than fir for a round handrail?
Beech (~720 kg/m³) is considerably more resistant to abrasion than fir (~450 kg/m³). On a handrail used several times a day, beech is much less likely to show marks over time. In laminated form, it is also more dimensionally stable. Fir remains suitable for stairs with little traffic or projects on a tight budget.
Which brackets should I buy for a Ø42 mm round handrail?
Round-profile brackets are collars or cradles that grip the wooden cylinder. They differ from the grooved brackets used for moulded handrails. Woodup offers brackets for round handrails in this diameter, sold separately in the accessories section.
How long does a laminated beech handrail last?
Indoors, with a properly applied and renewed coat of stair varnish or varnish, a laminated beech handrail can last 20 years or more. Its lifespan depends mainly on how often it is used, the quality of the initial finish and the renewal of its surface protection.
Do I need to pre-drill before screwing into beech?
Yes, always. Beech is a hardwood – inserting screws without pre-drilling risks splitting the wood or bending the screw. Use a drill bit slightly narrower than the screw (e.g. a 3.5 mm bit for a 4 mm screw). This is particularly important within 5 cm of the ends.
Can this handrail be used outdoors?
No. Laminated beech is designed for indoor use only. Outdoors, moisture cycles and weathering quickly degrade lamination adhesives that are not designed for those conditions. For an outdoor handrail, choose a suitable wood such as Douglas fir or an exotic hardwood.
What is the difference between a round and a moulded handrail profile?
A round profile lets the hand slide smoothly along its entire length without catching, which is often appreciated on steep stairs. A moulded profile has chamfered edges that provide a slightly firmer grip from the side. The choice mainly comes down to how you prefer to use the handrail and the look you want.
