Round oak handrail Ø42 mm
Round handrail in solid glulam oak Ø42 mm, cylindrical profile with continuous grip. Very hard and stable wood (~750 kg/m³), pronounced grain characteristic of oak. Available in 3 lengths: 195 cm, 250 cm, 295 cm. Supplied raw, to be varnished, oiled or sealed before use. Interior use only. Brackets for round profile Ø42 mm and fixings to be ordered separately. Pre-drilling mandatory before screwing into oak to avoid splitting.
Round oak handrail Ø42 mm glued laminated, indoor use
This round handrail in solid glued laminated oak features a cylindrical profile of 42 mm in diameter for a continuous and consistent grip. Oak is a very hard deciduous wood (density ~750 kg/m³), among the most wear-resistant species available in interior joinery. Its pronounced grain and golden to light brown hue give it a distinctive natural appearance, enhanced by an oil or satin varnish finish.
The non-finger-jointed glued laminated construction guarantees superior dimensional stability compared to raw sawn solid oak: the laminations glued in alternating directions better absorb movement caused by variations in ambient humidity. For indoor use only - interior glued laminated oak is not designed to withstand outdoor weather conditions.
Three lengths are available: 200, 250 and 300 cm. Supplied raw, it must be treated before use. Brackets are to be ordered separately - they must be suitable for a round Ø42 mm profile, different from the groove brackets used for moulded handrails.

Key points
- ✓ Very hard wood (~750 kg/m³): longevity and abrasion resistance among the best of any European species
- ✓ Round profile Ø42 mm: continuous sliding of the hand, comfortable cylindrical grip for all users
- ✓ Non-finger-jointed glued laminated: increased dimensional stability, reduced risk of warping over time
- ✓ Natural oak grain: pronounced grain enhanced by oil or satin varnish
- ✓ Oak kit available: a complete kit with brackets is available separately to simplify ordering
Installation advice
Select brackets suitable for a round profile of Ø42 mm - collars or cradle brackets, different from groove brackets. Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm. For 200 cm, 3 brackets are sufficient; for 300 cm, allow for 4 evenly spaced at equal intervals.
Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor. As oak is a very hard wood, pre-drilling is mandatory before any screwing - without pre-drilling, the wood may split or the screw may deform. Apply the finish preferably before installation to cover all faces, including the ends.
Maintenance and protection
Raw oak must be treated before use. Recommended finishes according to the desired result:
- Staircase floor lacquer: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance to friction, durability 5 to 8 years
- Natural oil for interior wood: penetrates the fibres, strengthens resistance, natural matt finish, renewal every 2 to 3 years
- Maintenance wax: used alongside oiling, nourishes the wood and makes routine maintenance easier
For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid abrasive products or acidic cleaners. Oak naturally develops a patina towards warmer golden tones over time - regular oil maintenance enhances this effect and nourishes the wood in depth.
WoodUp advice
What to know before buying: the round Ø42 mm oak profile requires cradle brackets. Pre-drilling is mandatory; use stainless steel or brass screws only to avoid tannin staining. Wall fixings not included. Treat all faces before installation. Indoor use only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the round oak handrail and the round beech version?
Both species are hardwoods in glued laminated Ø42 mm. Oak (density ~750 kg/m³) is slightly harder than beech (~720 kg/m³) and has a more pronounced grain and a warmer golden hue. Beech is more uniform and takes staining more evenly. For a natural finish with visible wood grain, oak is often preferred. For a painted or tinted finish, beech is equally suitable.
What brackets should I use for a round Ø42 mm oak handrail?
Brackets must be designed for a round profile - Ø42 mm collars or cradle brackets, different from 21x5 mm groove brackets. Woodup offers handrail brackets for round profiles suited to this diameter, available separately. A complete oak kit with brackets is also available if you wish to order everything at once.
Is pre-drilling absolutely necessary before screwing into oak?
Yes, absolutely. Oak is a very hard wood - a screw driven without pre-drilling can split the wood or deform, especially near the ends. Use a drill bit with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw (e.g. a 3.5 mm bit for a 4 mm screw). This precaution applies both when fixing brackets to a wooden wall and for any screw passing through the handrail.
Can this handrail be used outdoors or under a canopy?
No. Solid oak can be used outdoors, but glued laminated oak is manufactured with interior adhesives not suited to freeze-thaw cycles and outdoor moisture. Even under a canopy, condensation and humidity fluctuations will eventually cause the laminations to delaminate. For outdoor use, opt for treated solid oak or a rot-resistant species.
What finish should I choose to enhance the grain of the oak?
Natural oil for interior wood is the finish that best enhances the grain and natural figuring of oak, while nourishing the wood in depth. For a more protected and glossy appearance, opt for a satin varnish or floor lacquer. Avoid opaque paints that would mask the characteristic hue of oak.
Is this handrail suitable for heavily used staircases?
Yes. The Ø42 mm glued laminated oak is one of the most abrasion-resistant wooden handrails in the range. With a correctly applied and renewed floor lacquer finish, it is suitable for staircases with sustained daily use. For professional or public building use, specific regulatory requirements apply - consult a professional before installation.
