Round fir handrail Ø50 mm with adjustable brackets — ready-to-install kit

This round handrail in solid fir Ø50 mm is supplied with its adjustable bichromate steel wall brackets and fixing screws. The kit is designed for direct installation, without having to source accessories separately. The 21x5 mm groove engages into the bracket heads and ensures stable support along the entire length.

The 50 mm diameter provides a generous grip, well suited to staircases for family use and users seeking a firm support. The cylindrical profile allows a smooth hand slide from bottom to top. Fir, a light softwood with straight grain, is lightweight and easy to work. It is reserved for interior use only: outdoor moisture would cause swelling and rapid deterioration without specific protection.

Four lengths are available: 150, 200, 250 and 300 cm. The kit includes 2 brackets for lengths up to 250 cm, and 3 brackets for 300 cm. The screws provided are suitable for fixing the brackets to the wall. Additional fixings may be required depending on the wall type (solid concrete, plasterboard, timber frame).

Key points

  • Complete kit: handrail + bichromate adjustable brackets + screws, no additional purchase required
  • Ø50 mm diameter: generous grip, suited to large hands and elderly users
  • Adjustable brackets: adapt to slightly uneven walls without prior levelling compound
  • Customisable raw wood: can be painted, varnished or oiled to match interior décor
  • Accessible installation: fixed in 4 steps, no joinery skills required

Installation advice

Mark the alignment of the handrail on the wall using a spirit level. Mark the bracket positions: place the first one 15–20 cm from the bottom of the handrail, the last at the same distance from the top, and space the intermediate ones at equal intervals. The spacing between two brackets must not exceed 80 cm to prevent any sagging.

Drill and plug according to wall type (concrete anchor, expansion plasterboard anchor or screw directly into timber stud). Fix the brackets, engage the handrail groove into the bracket heads, then tighten the locking screws without over-tightening — fir is a soft wood that can be marked easily. Install at a height between 80 and 100 cm from the stair nosing.

Apply the chosen finish preferably before installation, when the piece is accessible on all its faces.

Care and protection

Before use, treat the raw fir with a suitable interior finish. Options depending on use:

  • Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance to abrasion, durability 5 to 7 years
  • Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance, renewal every 2 to 3 years
  • Interior wood paint: after grain-filler primer, for a coloured finish

For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid all abrasive products. A heavily used grip area may require an earlier finish refresh — sand lightly with 180 grit before re-varnishing.

WoodUp tip

What to know before buying: this round Ø50 mm handrail is sold with its brackets — check the number of brackets included against your span (1 bracket every 80–100 cm). Wall fixing screws are not included. The round profile requires cradle-type brackets (not compatible with groove-type brackets). Raw fir must be treated before installation. Interior use only.

Frequently asked questions

What length of handrail should I choose for my staircase?

Measure the developed length of your staircase following the slope, from bottom to top. Add 10 to 15 cm of overhang at each end if space allows. For a straight staircase of 10 steps (tread 25 cm, riser height 19 cm), the developed length is approximately 270 cm — the 300 cm length will provide a comfortable overhang.

Are the bichromate brackets suitable for all wall types?

The adjustable brackets supplied can be fixed to any solid wall surface. For a concrete or block wall, use expansion anchors. For a plasterboard partition, position the fixings on the frame studs (locatable with a stud finder) or use reinforced plasterboard anchors. The included screws are suitable for standard fixing into concrete or timber.

Why choose a Ø50 mm diameter rather than Ø42 mm?

The Ø50 mm provides a more generous grip, often preferred by people with large hands or those seeking very firm support (elderly users, people with reduced mobility). The Ø42 mm is slimmer and integrates more discreetly into contemporary interiors. For standard family use, both diameters are suitable — the choice is primarily based on grip comfort.

Can this fir handrail be painted?

Yes. Raw fir can be painted easily after applying a grain-filler primer. Use a satin or matt interior wood paint, in a minimum of 2 coats. For a smooth finish, sand lightly between coats with 180 grit. The smooth cylindrical surface of the round profile makes application with a foam roller or flat brush straightforward.

Is this handrail suitable for people with reduced mobility?

The Ø50 mm diameter is suited to a firm and secure grip. For people with reduced mobility, install the handrail at 90 cm height from the nosing and ensure it is continuous along the full length of the run. The adjustable brackets allow precise alignment even on slightly uneven walls.

Can two lengths be combined to exceed 300 cm?

There is no dedicated connector for this reference. A butt joint is technically possible by positioning a bracket at the junction point, but the join will remain visible. For staircases whose developed length exceeds 300 cm, consult Woodup to explore a suitable solution.
