This straight laminated beech post is 107 cm tall with a square 70x70 mm cross-section. It is designed to add to or form the uprights of balustrades in the WoodUp beech range (kits: 2 m beech balustrade kit + 2 posts, 1 m beech balustrade kit + 1 post, 1 m beech balustrade kit + 2 posts, 2 m beech balustrade kit + 1 post). Supplied unfinished, not pre-drilled and without fixings, it gives you complete freedom to choose its position and fixing method. A balustrade is also called a guardrail.

The 107 cm height is standard for posts in WoodUp beech balustrade kits. Once the rails and handrail are in place, the finished balustrade reaches 1 metre in height, meeting the NF P01-012 standard for indoor landing balustrades. Laminated beech has better dimensional stability than solid beech: its cross-layered construction limits shrinkage and warping in indoor conditions.

Installation advice

Positioning: Mark the post centreline on the floor and check its alignment with adjacent posts. Leave no more than 1.5 m between posts to maintain the balustrade’s required rigidity. Because the post is not pre-drilled, you can choose the height and position of the fixing holes. Always drill perpendicular to the face for a neat joint.

Fixing to the floor: Secure the post using a floor bracket or plate suitable for your substrate (not included). On concrete, use a cast-in plate or expansion anchors. On a timber floor, use a screw-fixed plate. Check carefully with a spirit level that the post is vertical – an out-of-plumb post will affect the alignment of the entire balustrade.

Drilling: Use an Ø8 mm wood twist bit for the fixing holes. Mark the positions with an awl, first drill pilot holes at Ø4 mm to prevent the beech from splitting, then drill to the final diameter. Laminated beech is dense – careful drilling helps prevent splits at the base of the post.

Care and protection

Apply a finish before use: 2–3 coats of floor varnish for a durable result, or hardwax oil for a natural look. Unfinished laminated beech stains quickly when handled and reacts to changes in ambient humidity. Once finished, clean with soapy water. Never expose it outdoors – prolonged moisture can cause the laminated wood to come apart.

How do I fix this post to a timber floor?

For a timber floor, use a screw-fixed anchor plate compatible with a 70x70 mm post. Secure the plate with wood screws at least Ø5 mm in diameter and 60 mm long, driven into the supporting structure (joist or batten). If fixing into plywood or OSB alone, reinforce it with a wider plate or anchor it into the structure beneath. The post is then secured to the plate with bolts or screws driven in from the side.

Can this laminated beech post be painted?

Yes. Laminated beech takes paint very well after a light sanding with 150-grit abrasive. Apply a suitable primer, followed by two coats of satin acrylic paint or polyurethane lacquer. Fine-grained beech gives excellent results for a dense, even white finish. Paint is one of the most popular finishes for this wood in contemporary interiors.

Is this beech post suitable for an outdoor balustrade?

No. Beech is suitable for indoor use only. Its high shrinkage rate and sensitivity to moisture make it unsuitable for permanent outdoor exposure.
