Straight solid wood balustrade slat h 95cm section 95x18mm - 4 species
This solid wood straight slat is designed to form the vertical infill of a wooden balustrade or guard rail. With a height of 95 cm and a section of 95x18 mm, it offers a more "panel" look than the classic 50mm spindle — each slat is noticeably wider, which reduces the number of elements required and gives a more contemporary appearance. It is available in four species: douglas fir, fir, pine or beech.
The 95x18 mm section fits into the 18x15 mm groove bottom rails of the WoodUp range. The regulatory spacing between slats must not exceed 11 cm in accordance with standard NF P01-012 for landing balustrades. Over 2 metres in length, allow approximately 9 to 10 slats of 95 mm with 11 cm spacing. All species are supplied raw and untreated.

Installation advice
Slat calculation: To calculate the number of slats required for your span, apply the formula: total length ÷ (slat width + maximum spacing) i.e. 95 + 110 = 205mm per slat. Over 2 metres: 2000 ÷ 205 → 9 slats. Check the actual spacing before fixing: (2000 - 9x95) ÷ 10 spaces = 114.5mm — slightly above 11 cm. Adjust to 10 slats to remain compliant: (2000 - 10x95) ÷ 11 = 104mm. Rounded, compliant.
Installation: Insert the slats into the groove of the bottom rail. Distribute the spacing evenly along the full length before fixing the handrail. For configurations without a groove, fix using lateral screwing or concealed brackets. Pre-drill at Ø3mm before screwing to avoid splitting the wood across the width.
Maintenance and protection
Apply a finish before installation to cover all faces easily. Indoors, use a varnish or oil-wax. Outdoors, douglas fir only with a saturating oil to be renewed every 2 years. Avoid fir, pine and beech in outdoor conditions exposed to the elements without regular reinforced treatment.
WoodUp Advice
What to know before buying: the 95x18mm straight slat gives a more "panel" look than the classic spindle — fewer elements to install, but a more substantial appearance. The maximum spacing of 11cm between slats remains mandatory (NF P01-012). Over 2 metres, allow 9 to 10 slats depending on the spacing chosen. Apply the finish before inserting into the groove — the rear face and lower ends in the groove will be inaccessible once in place. Douglas fir can be used in sheltered outdoor conditions with a suitable finish.
Frequently asked questions
How many 95mm slats are needed for 2 metres of balustrade at 11cm spacing?
With a spacing of 110mm and a width of 95mm, each slat + space equals 205mm. Over 2000mm: 2000 ÷ 205 ≈ 9.7 → rounded up to 10 slats for an actual spacing of 104mm (compliant ≤ 11 cm). Always check the calculation against your actual length — end rails and post thicknesses may slightly alter the usable length.
What is the difference between the straight slat (Straight balustrade slat 95cm) and the straight spindle?
The straight slat is 95mm wide, the spindle 50mm. The visual effect is different: the slat gives a balustrade more of a "cladding" look, with wider gaps between broad elements; the spindle gives the classic bar appearance. Same height (95cm), same thickness (18mm), same available species, same groove compatibility. The choice is purely aesthetic.
Can straight slats and spindles be mixed in the same balustrade?
Technically yes, provided both fit into the same groove (18mm depth) and the total spacing between each element remains ≤ 11 cm. In practice, mixing sections creates an irregular appearance. For a deliberate decorative effect (rhythm, alternation), it is entirely achievable — simply check that the spacing complies at every point.
Can straight slats be cut down if the 95cm height is too tall?
Yes. All four species can easily be cut with a saw. If you reduce the height, keep the machined face (smooth face) at the top and cut from the bottom. Sand the cut edge with 120-grit sandpaper before applying the finish. If you reduce by more than 5 cm, check that the slat still fits correctly into the groove of the bottom rail (minimum 15mm depth required).
What treatment should be applied to a straight douglas fir slat for outdoor use?
As the douglas fir is supplied raw and untreated, apply an exterior oil or wood saturator to all faces before installation, including the edges. Renew every 1 to 2 years depending on exposure. Douglas fir naturally turns grey without treatment — its mechanical properties are not affected, but the surface gradually deteriorates in damp conditions. For tinted species (beech, pine, fir), a microporous stain provides effective protection.
