This unfinished solid fir balustrade kit covers a 2-metre span and stands 1.02 m high, in accordance with French standards for indoor landing balustrades. Designed to secure mezzanines, landings and indoor walkways, it can be assembled without specialist machinery. A balustrade is also known as a guardrail.

The kit contains all the main components: a 60x50mm moulded handrail, a 50x35mm bottom rail, 12 spindles measuring 50x20mm, wooden joining dowels and 1 post measuring 60x60mm and 1.2m high. The parts are pre-measured and machined: built-in grooves position the spindles without a template. To assemble, fix the bottom rail to the surface, insert the spindles into the grooves, then fit the handrail onto the posts. The fir is supplied unfinished and untreated: applying oil, varnish or wood stain before use significantly extends its lifespan.

Floor-fixing base plates are not supplied because they depend on the surface: wood, concrete and tiles require different plates and fixings. The kit is designed exclusively for indoor use - fir, a naturally class 2 timber, cannot withstand exposure to the weather without more intensive treatment and a change in use class.

Fir range: this kit is part of the fir balustrade range (60 x 60 mm post, 60 x 50 mm handrail, 50 x 20 mm spindles). It cannot be combined with the beech balustrade kits, which have different component sizes (70 x 70 mm post, 50 x 50 mm handrail, 65 x 20 mm spindles). Use components from one range throughout the installation.

Installation advice

Preparation: Check that the surface is level and sound. The fir is supplied unfinished: if you choose varnish or paint, apply a first coat before assembly for easier access. You will need a drill, a spirit level and a screwdriver.

Installation: Start by fixing the bottom rail to the floor with brackets or base plates suited to the surface material. Position the spindles in the bottom rail grooves, leaving a maximum gap of 11 cm between them. Then secure the post or posts using base plates (not included). Fit the handrail onto the posts and dowel the assembly together. Check that it is vertical with a spirit level before final tightening.

Important: This kit covers a 2 m span and includes 1 post. For longer spans, combine it with the 2 m kit without a post or the 1 m kit without a post (sold separately). Allow for 1 post every 1.5 m at most to keep the assembly stable.

Care and protection

Solid fir is a softwood with a stated natural durability class of 2. In dry indoor conditions, it needs little maintenance, but a protective finish is essential to limit marks and moisture absorption. Apply 2 to 3 coats of floor varnish, hardwax oil or polyurethane varnish before or after assembly. Clean with slightly soapy water, without abrasive products. An annual check of the joints (screw tightness and dowel condition) can extend its lifespan beyond 15 years in dry indoor conditions.

Before you buy: this kit covers an exact 2-metre span and includes one post. If your span is slightly longer (2.05m, for example), you will need either to trim the components or order an additional kit. The assembled height of 1.02m complies with the NF P01-012 standard for indoor landing balustrades. Apply the finish (oil, floor varnish or paint) before final assembly to protect every surface, including grooves and joints that will be inaccessible once assembled. Floor-fixing base plates must be purchased separately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix the fir balustrade kit to a concrete floor?

On concrete, secure the post base plates with expansion anchors or chemical anchors (not included). Choose stainless-steel base plates to prevent rust marks on the floor. Drill holes at least 8 mm in diameter for Ø6 mm anchors. The base plate must be fixed at at least 4 points to keep the assembly secure.

Can the 2 m fir balustrade kit be used outdoors?

No. Unfinished fir is not suitable for permanent exposure to the weather. For outdoor use, choose individual components in Douglas fir or larch, available from Woodup. Douglas fir is naturally classified as 3b (wood for sheltered outdoor use) and withstands moisture much better.

How can I extend the balustrade beyond 2 metres?

Combine this kit with one or more 1 m or 2 m kits without a post. Each extension joins onto the handrail. Allow for 1 intermediate post every 1.5 m to maintain rigidity. Join the sections with dowels or metal brackets, ordered separately.

Which finish should I choose for an indoor fir balustrade?

For maximum resistance to knocks and scratches (on a staircase or frequently used mezzanine): 2–3 coats of staircase floor varnish. For a natural matt look: hardwax oil, reapplied every 2 years. For colour: indoor wood stain or paint. Avoid outdoor-use products indoors, as they may release solvents in enclosed spaces.

What is the required spacing between the spindles?

French regulations require a maximum gap of 11 cm between vertical spindles on a landing balustrade. With 12 spindles across 2 metres, this kit meets that requirement. If young children are present, check that no object smaller than 11 cm can pass between the spindles.
