Straight Raw Fir Post H 120cm - 60x60mm Section for Balustrade and Balcony Railing
This straight raw solid fir post measures 120 cm in height with a square section of 60x60 mm. It is designed to form the vertical uprights of a balustrade or indoor balcony railing, and pairs directly with the handrails, bottom rails and spindles in the WoodUp range. Sold individually, it allows you to freely compose a bespoke balustrade or to complete an existing kit.
Raw planed fir offers a clean, lightly textured surface, ready to receive a finish (paint, oil, stain or varnish). Its 60x60 mm section matches the standard format of WoodUp fir balustrade kits - it is directly compatible with the 60x50 mm handrails and 50x35 mm bottom rails in the range. In dry indoor use, a protective finish is sufficient to guarantee a lifespan of 15 years and more. For a sheltered outdoor installation, choose an exterior stain or oil and renew the treatment every 2 to 3 years.

Installation advice
Layout: Space the posts 1.5 m maximum apart to ensure the regulatory stability of the balcony railing. Over a 2 m span, one end post and one intermediate post are sufficient if the other end is anchored to a wall. Over 3 m or more, allow for one post every 1.5 m.
Floor fixing: This post is fixed using floor plates (not included). Choose galvanised steel or stainless steel plates for maximum durability. On concrete: Ø8mm expansion anchors. On wooden floor: long wood screws Ø5mm (≥ 60 mm). Check the vertical alignment with a spirit level before final tightening.
Assembly: The handrail and the bottom rail rest on or are embedded into the post depending on the configuration. For a clean finish, pre-drill the joints before screwing. Apply the finish of your choice before assembly if you opt for a varnish or paint - access to hidden faces is much easier.
Maintenance and protection
Indoors in dry conditions, apply 2 to 3 coats of floor varnish or oil-wax and clean with soapy water once or twice a year. In sheltered outdoor conditions, renew the stain or exterior oil every 2 to 3 years. Check the tightness of the fixing plates annually. Without treatment, fir darkens and deteriorates rapidly in the presence of moisture.
WoodUp tip
What to know before buying: raw planed solid fir absorbs finishing products very well, but it is sensitive to moisture without protection. You must apply an oil, a floor varnish or a stain before installation — not after, as the faces embedded in the plates will be inaccessible. Plan for the floor fixing plates separately: they are not included and the choice depends on the type of support (wood, concrete, metal). On concrete, use Ø8mm expansion anchors; on a wooden floor, 6x60mm wood screws are sufficient. Space the posts a maximum of 1.5 m apart to guarantee the regulatory rigidity of the assembly.
Frequently asked questions
Is this 60x60mm fir post compatible with WoodUp balustrade kits?
Yes. It is designed to pair with WoodUp fir balustrade kits (Fir balustrade kit 2m + 1 post, Fir balustrade kit 1m without post, Fir balustrade kit 2m without post). The 60x50mm handrail and the 50x35mm bottom rail in these kits are dimensioned to slot onto or be screwed to this 60x60mm post. It is the standard replacement or extension post in the WoodUp fir range.
How many posts are needed for a 3-metre balustrade?
For a 3 m span, allow for 3 posts minimum: one at each end and one intermediate post in the middle (1.5 m spacing). If one end is fixed to a wall or a stringer, 2 posts are sufficient - one free-standing and one intermediate 1.5 m from the wall.
Can this fir post be used outdoors?
No. Fir is a natural durability class 2 species: it holds up for a few months without protection but deteriorates rapidly under permanent exposure to the elements. Apply an exterior stain or a water-repellent oil before installation and renew the treatment every 2 to 3 years. For intensive outdoor use (damp area, coastal location), opt for douglas fir or pressure-treated pine.
What fixing plate should I choose for this post?
Fixing plates are not included as they depend on the support. For a wooden floor, choose a screwed anchor plate Ø60mm compatible with square section. For concrete, a resin anchor plate or expansion anchor plate. Prefer stainless steel or galvanised plates to avoid rust, especially outdoors.
What finish should be applied to this fir post before installation?
This post is supplied raw and untreated: apply a protective finish before installation to cover areas that are difficult to access after fitting. Indoors, two coats of floor varnish or oil-wax are sufficient. Fir is an absorbent species: sand with 120-grit paper and apply a primer before painting to avoid blotching. Outdoors, this post is not suitable without prior pressure treatment.
