Solid wood straight newel post h 120cm 70x70mm cross-section - 4 timber species for balustrade

This straight newel post for balustrade and handrail measures 120 cm in height with a square cross-section of 70x70 mm. It is available in four timber species - douglas fir, fir, pine or beech - to suit every use and every budget. Sold individually, it allows you to create a fully bespoke balustrade or add an intermediate newel post to an existing kit.

The choice of timber species directly determines the intended use: beech is reserved for interior use (sensitive to moisture), fir and pine are suitable for interior and sheltered outdoor use with treatment, douglas fir is the most suitable species for exposed outdoor use thanks to its natural class 3 resistance. All are supplied raw and untreated, ready to receive the finish of your choice.

Installation tips

Choosing the timber species according to use: For an interior staircase or mezzanine, beech gives the cleanest finishes (fine grain, pinkish-white). Fir and pine are more economical and perfectly suited to interior use. For a covered terrace or sheltered outdoor staircase, choose douglas fir - its natural resistance (class 3) allows it to hold up for several years without intensive treatment, even under moderate exposure conditions.

Fixing: Space the newel posts a maximum of 1.5 m apart. Fix each newel post with a floor plate suited to the substrate. Check the vertical alignment with a spirit level before final tightening. Pre-drill the assemblies to Ø4 mm before the final screwing to avoid splitting the wood in the square cross-section.

Maintenance and protection

For interior use, apply varnish or oil-wax before commissioning. For sheltered outdoor use with douglas fir, renew the wood stain or exterior oil every 2 to 3 years. Douglas fir outdoors without treatment will naturally grey but retains its mechanical properties for several years. To maintain the original colour, apply an exterior wood saturating oil annually.

WoodUp tip

What to know before buying: this newel post is supplied raw without pre-drilling — the position of the holes depends on your specific configuration (mounting plate height, rail position). Mark the drilling points in pencil after a dry fit before any final fixing. Douglas fir, if intended for outdoor use, must receive a suitable finish (class 3 oil or wood stain) before installation. For interior use, all timber species are suitable; choose the species in keeping with the rest of the balustrade for a harmonious result.

Frequently asked questions

Which timber species should I choose for an outdoor terrace balustrade?

Douglas fir is the best choice for exposed outdoor use among the 4 available timber species. Its natural class 3 resistance allows it to withstand the elements without curative treatment. Fir and pine are reserved for interior use. Outdoors, use douglas fir only. For sheltered outdoor use with douglas fir, regular renewal is required. Beech must be excluded entirely for outdoor use - it deteriorates rapidly in damp conditions.

Is this 70x70mm newel post compatible with WoodUp straight spindles?

Yes. The straight spindles Solid wood straight spindle, straight boards Straight balustrade board 95cm and moulded boards Solid wood moulded board in the WoodUp range are dimensioned to fit between 70x70mm newel posts. The bottom rails Solid wood bottom rail and handrails Solid wood moulded handrail also bear on this standard cross-section.

Can this newel post be cut down if the height is too great?

Yes. All four timber species can easily be cut to length with a mitre saw or circular saw. If you reduce the height of the newel post, recalculate the position of the assembly drill holes accordingly. Sand the cut edge before applying the finish.

How many newel posts for a 2-metre balustrade?

For a 2 m span, you need a minimum of 2 newel posts - one at each end. If one end is anchored to a wall or a stringer, a single free-standing newel post is sufficient. For a span of 3 m and above, add an intermediate newel post every 1.5 m.

Should this newel post be treated before installation, even in douglas fir?

Douglas fir is supplied raw and untreated. For outdoor use, apply an exterior oil or wood stain to all faces before installation, including cut edges. Class 3 douglas fir is naturally resistant to fungi and insects, but an annual surface treatment significantly extends its aesthetic lifespan and limits greying. For fir, pine and beech, a treatment appropriate to the intended use (interior only) is essential.

What is the difference between a straight newel post and a turned newel post for a balustrade?

The straight newel post (70x70 mm cross-section, H 120cm) has sharp edges and a clean contemporary profile. The turned newel post is lathe-shaped, with a more classic and traditional profile. Both have the same cross-section and height, but the aesthetic differs markedly. Choose the straight version for a modern interior, the turned version for a classic-style staircase.
