The Quadrum starter kit is the initial section of an anodised aluminium balustrade system with horizontal square rails. It covers a length of 120 cm and has a finished height of 1 metre, meeting landing balustrade standards. Available in two finishes – gloss black for a bold contemporary look and gloss stainless-steel finish for timeless appeal – it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use thanks to the corrosion resistance of anodised aluminium.

The kit includes pre-assembled posts, a square-profile aluminium handrail and five horizontal square rails – it is ready to install on arrival. Floor-fixing screws are not included because the fixings needed depend on the surface. To cover spans longer than 120 cm, combine this starter kit with one or more Quadrum extension kits, each adding 100 cm to the span.

Installation tips

Planning: For a 220 cm span, combine 1 starter kit (120 cm) + 1 extension kit (100 cm). For 320 cm: 1 starter kit + 2 extension kits. The final length can be adjusted by cutting on site. Allow for joining accessories (rail and handrail connectors) between each module.

Floor fixing: The posts attach using the included base shoes. Choose fixings to suit your surface: Ø6 mm stainless-steel screws for timber flooring or Ø8 mm expansion anchors for concrete. Floor fixings are not supplied – purchase them separately. Check that each post is vertical with a spirit level before fully tightening the fixings.

Joining modules: Join the square rails between modules using Quadrum connectors and the handrail using horizontal connectors such as the Quadrum 80x30 mm articulated handrail connector. These accessories are not included in the starter kit – order them separately to suit your layout.

Care and protection

Anodised aluminium is virtually maintenance-free. Annual cleaning with soapy water and a soft sponge is enough to maintain its glossy appearance. Avoid abrasive products, which could scratch the anodised surface. In coastal areas, rinse with fresh water after episodes of wind-blown sand or sea spray to preserve the finish’s shine.

To cover a span longer than 120 cm, combine this starter kit with as many extension kits as needed, each adding 100 cm. How do I calculate how many Quadrum extension kits to order?

Subtract the starter kit length (120 cm) from your total span, then divide by 100 cm (the length of an extension kit). Example: for 320 cm: (320 − 120) ÷ 100 = 2 extension kits. For 270 cm? (270 − 120) ÷ 100 = 1.5 → order 2 extension kits and cut the last one to 50 cm on site.

Is the Quadrum kit suitable for a staircase (sloping balustrade)?

The Quadrum starter kit is designed for horizontal balustrades (landings, mezzanines and terraces). A sloping stair balustrade requires angled posts or angle-adjustment accessories. Contact WoodUp to check compatibility with your staircase layout before ordering.

What is the difference between the Quadrum and Ellipsis ranges?

The Quadrum range has flat posts and square-profile rails for a more angular, industrial look. The Ellipsis range has round posts and round Ø16 mm rails for a softer, more organic look. Both are available in gloss black and a gloss stainless-steel finish, and are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Accessories are not interchangeable between the two ranges.

Are floor-fixing screws supplied with the Quadrum kit?

No. Floor-fixing screws are not included because the fixings needed depend on the surface. Use stainless-steel screws at least Ø6 mm x 50 mm for timber flooring, or Ø8 mm expansion anchors for concrete. For tiles or slabs, use fixings suitable for tiles, pre-drilling with a diamond drill bit.

Will the Quadrum kit’s gloss black finish resist scratches in everyday use?

Gloss black anodised aluminium is susceptible to fine scratches under heavy use (frequent traffic or contact with hard objects). For a stair balustrade that people regularly lean on, the gloss stainless-steel finish is generally more scratch-resistant. The black finish shows fingerprints more readily but is easy to clean with a damp microfibre cloth. Both finishes benefit from the same long-lasting anodised coating.
