The Quadrum starter kit is the starting section of a balustrade system in anodised aluminium with horizontal square rails. It covers a length of 120 cm for a finished height of 1 metre, compliant with landing balustrade standards. Available in two finishes - gloss black for a bold contemporary look, gloss stainless steel for a timeless aesthetic - it is equally suited to indoor and outdoor use thanks to the corrosion resistance of anodised aluminium.

The kit includes pre-assembled posts, an aluminium square-section handrail and the five horizontal square rails - it is ready to install upon receipt. Floor fixing screws are not included as they depend on the substrate. To cover spans greater than 120 cm, combine this starter kit with one or more Quadrum extension kits, each adding 100 cm of additional span.

Installation advice

Planning: For a span of 220 cm, combine 1 starter kit (120cm) + 1 extension kit (100cm). For 320 cm: 1 starter kit + 2 extension kits. The final span can be adjusted by cutting on site. Allow for junction accessories (rail and handrail connectors) between each module.

Floor fixing: Posts are fixed via the included base shoes. Choose fixings to suit your substrate: stainless steel screws Ø6mm for timber floors, expansion anchors Ø8mm for concrete. Floor fixings are not supplied - plan this purchase in advance. Check each post is plumb with a spirit level before final tightening.

Junctions between modules: Connect the square rails between modules using the Quadrum connectors and the handrail using the horizontal connectors Articulated connector MC Quadrum 80x30mm. These accessories are not included in the starter kit - order them separately according to your configuration.

Maintenance and protection

Anodised aluminium is virtually maintenance-free. An annual clean with soapy water and a soft sponge is sufficient to maintain the gloss finish. Avoid abrasive products that could scratch the anodising. In coastal areas, rinse with fresh water after episodes of sand-laden wind or sea spray to preserve the brilliance of the finish.

To cover a span greater than 120cm, combine this starter kit with as many extension kits (ID 720) as needed, each adding 100cm. The two available finishes (matt black and brushed stainless steel) cannot be mixed on the same balustrade. Anodised aluminium requires no special maintenance other than annual cleaning.

How do I calculate how many Quadrum extension kits to order?

Subtract the length of the starter kit (120cm) from your total span, then divide by 100cm (the length of one extension kit). Example: for 320cm: (320 - 120) ÷ 100 = 2 extension kits. For 270cm? (270 - 120) ÷ 100 = 1.5 → order 2 extension kits and cut the last one to 50cm on site.

Is the Quadrum kit suitable for a staircase (raking balustrade)?

The Quadrum starter kit is designed for horizontal balustrades (landing, mezzanine, terrace). For a raking stair balustrade, inclined posts or angular adaptation accessories are required. Contact WoodUp to check compatibility with your stair configuration before ordering.

What is the difference between the Quadrum range and the Ellipsis range?

The Quadrum range has flat posts and square-section rails - a more angular, industrial look. The Ellipsis range has round posts and round Ø16mm-section rails - a softer, more organic look. Both are available in gloss black and gloss stainless steel, and are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Accessories are not interchangeable between the two ranges.

Are the floor fixings included with the Quadrum kit?

No. Floor fixing screws are not included as they depend on the type of substrate. Allow for stainless steel screws Ø6mm minimum 50mm long for timber floors, or expansion anchors Ø8mm for concrete. For tiling or a concrete slab, use tile-specific anchors with a pilot hole drilled using a diamond bit.

Does the gloss black finish on the Quadrum kit resist scratches in everyday use?

Gloss black anodised aluminium is susceptible to fine scratches under heavy use (frequent traffic, contact with hard objects). For a stair balustrade with regular handgrip use, the gloss stainless steel finish is generally more scratch-resistant. The black finish shows fingerprints more readily but is easy to maintain with a damp microfibre cloth. Both finishes benefit from the same long-term durability of the anodising.
