95 cm straight solid wood slat for balustrades – 4 wood species
95cm straight solid wood balustrade slat – 95x18mm section. Douglas fir, spruce, pine or beech. Unfinished and untreated; sold individually. Maximum spacing between slats: 11cm (NF P01-012). The wide 95mm section gives a more panel-like look than a 50mm spindle. Compatible with WoodUp bottom rails with an 18mm groove. Use depends on wood species: class 3 Douglas fir for sheltered outdoor use; beech, spruce and pine indoors only. Apply a suitable finish before installation.
Straight solid wood balustrade slat, H 95cm, 95x18mm section – 4 wood species
This straight solid wood slat is designed as vertical infill for a wooden balustrade. At 95 cm high with a 95x18 mm section, it creates a more panel-like appearance than a traditional 50mm spindle. Each slat is considerably wider, reducing the number of elements needed and giving a more contemporary look. Available in four wood species: Douglas fir, spruce, pine or beech. A balustrade is also called a guardrail.
The 95x18 mm section fits WoodUp bottom rails with an 18x15 mm groove. Under standard NF P01-012, the regulatory spacing between slats must not exceed 11 cm for landing balustrades. For a 2-metre length, allow approximately 9 to 10 slats of 95 mm with 11 cm spacing. All wood species are supplied unfinished and untreated.

Installation advice
Calculating the number of slats: To calculate how many you need for your span, use the formula: total length ÷ (slat width + maximum spacing), or 95 + 110 = 205mm per slat. For 2 metres: 2000 ÷ 205 → 9 slats. Check the actual spacing before fixing: (2000 - 9x95) ÷ 10 gaps = 114.5mm, slightly above 11 cm. Increase to 10 slats to comply: (2000 - 10x95) ÷ 11 = 104mm. Rounding up ensures compliance.
Installation: Insert the slats into the bottom rail groove. Space them evenly along the full length before securing the railing. Where there is no groove, fix them with screws through the sides or with concealed brackets. Pre-drill with a Ø3mm bit before screwing to prevent the wood from splitting across its width.
Care and protection
Apply a finish before installation so you can cover every face easily. Indoors, use a varnish or hardwax oil. Outdoors, use Douglas fir only, with a saturating wood oil renewed every 2 years. Avoid using spruce, pine or beech outdoors in exposed locations without regular, enhanced treatment.
WoodUp tip
Before you buy: the 95x18mm straight slat gives a more "panel-like" appearance than a traditional spindle: fewer elements to install, but a more substantial look. The maximum spacing of 11cm between slats remains mandatory (NF P01-012). For 2 metres, allow 9 to 10 slats, depending on your chosen spacing. Apply the finish before inserting the slats: the back face and lower ends seated in the groove will be inaccessible once fitted. Douglas fir can be used outdoors in a sheltered location with an appropriate finish.
Frequently asked questions
How many 95mm slats are needed for a 2-metre balustrade with 11cm spacing?
With 110mm spacing and a slat width of 95mm, each slat plus gap takes up 205mm. For 2000mm: 2000 ÷ 205 ≈ 9.7 → round up to 10 slats for an actual spacing of 104mm (compliant at ≤ 11 cm). Always check the calculation against your actual length: the end rails and post thicknesses can slightly change the usable length.
What is the difference between the straight slat (95cm straight balustrade slat) and a straight spindle?
The straight slat is 95mm wide; the spindle is 50mm wide. The visual effect differs: the slat creates a balustrade with more of a cladding look, with larger gaps between wide elements, while the spindle gives a traditional baluster appearance. They have the same height (95cm), thickness (18mm), available wood species and groove compatibility. The choice is purely aesthetic.
Can straight slats and spindles be combined in one balustrade?
Technically, yes, provided both fit the same groove (18mm deep) and the spacing between each element remains ≤ 11 cm. In practice, mixing the sections creates an uneven appearance. If you want a deliberate decorative effect through rhythm and alternation, it is entirely possible; just check that the spacing complies at every point.
Can straight slats be cut down if the 95cm height is too great?
Yes. All four wood species are easy to cut with a saw. If you shorten the slat, keep the machined face (the smooth face) at the top and cut from the bottom. Sand the cut edge with 120-grit abrasive before applying the finish. If you shorten it by more than 5 cm, check that the slat still fits correctly into the bottom rail groove (a minimum insertion depth of 15mm is needed).
What treatment should be applied to a straight Douglas fir slat for outdoor use?
As Douglas fir is supplied unfinished and untreated, apply an exterior wood oil or saturating wood treatment to all faces before installation, including the edges. Renew every 1 to 2 years, depending on exposure. Untreated Douglas fir naturally turns grey: its structural properties are unaffected, but the surface gradually deteriorates in damp areas. For woods chosen for their colour (beech, pine and spruce), a microporous wood stain provides effective protection.
