Solid Wood Moulded Handrail - 50x50mm Section, 4 Wood Species for Balustrade

This solid wood moulded handrail is the gripping element of a wooden balustrade or guard rail. Available in pine, fir, beech or douglas fir, its 50x50 mm section with rounded profile offers a comfortable grip and a neat appearance. It fits all 60x60mm and 70x70mm posts in the WoodUp range and can be fitted on existing posts or as part of a fully bespoke composition.

Supplied raw and untreated, it pairs with the finish of your choice: floor varnish for a surface resistant to knocks, oil-wax for a natural look, tinted wood stain to harmonise with your décor. The choice of wood species determines the use: beech and fir for indoors, douglas fir for sheltered outdoor areas.

Installation tips

The handrail is fixed to the posts by screwing or dowelling at the post head. Use concealed metal brackets or countersunk screws for a clean finish. For long spans (> 1.5m), fit an intermediate post to prevent the handrail from flexing under load. Apply the finish before fitting to easily cover the underside.

For a clean joint between two handrail sections, cut the ends at 45° with a mitre cut and glue them with wood glue before screwing. The joint is almost invisible once varnished or painted.

Maintenance and protection

The handrail is the most contact-exposed element: a protective finish must be applied before use. Stair varnish (2–3 coats) provides maximum resistance to knocks and hand abrasion. Oil-wax is suitable for less frequently used spaces and is easily renewed. Clean with soapy water. Outdoors (douglas fir only), renew the treatment every 2 to 3 years.

WoodUp tip

Important before buying: this moulded handrail is the gripping element of a balustrade — it must be firmly fixed to the posts, not simply rested on them. Plan for fixing by screwing from the underside every 80cm maximum. The 50x50mm moulded profile with a 21x5mm groove is compatible with the wall-mounted grooved brackets in the WoodUp range (IDs 164, 167). In douglas fir, this profile can be used in sheltered outdoor settings with a suitable finish. Other wood species are reserved for indoor use.

Frequently asked questions

Is this handrail compatible with WoodUp turned posts?

Yes. The moulded 50x50mm handrail is fixed to the turned posts Turned solid wood post with a 70x70mm section by screwing at the post head. The turned shape of the posts does not prevent the handrail from being fixed — use countersunk screws or a metal bracket to anchor the handrail into the top face of the post.

What length of handrail should I order for a 2m balustrade?

Order a handrail to the length of your usable span, with a few centimetres of allowance for trimming cuts. If your span is 200cm and the handrail bears on top of the posts (rather than between them), the total handrail length is the span plus the half-thicknesses of the posts on both sides. In practice: 200cm + 7cm = 207cm approximately.

Can this douglas fir handrail be used in an unsheltered outdoor setting?

Douglas fir naturally resists the elements better than fir or pine when exposed outdoors, but a handrail is not designed for direct exposure to the weather without treatment. For exposed outdoor use, apply an outdoor wood saturator before fitting and renew every 1 to 2 years. In the long term, an aluminium or stainless steel handrail is better suited to permanent exposure.

How do I neatly join two sections of handrail?

The neatest technique is a 45° mitre cut using a mitre saw on both sections. Apply wood glue to the cut faces, hold with a clamp and leave to dry for 24 hours. Lightly sand the joint before finishing — once varnished, the join is almost invisible. For a less stressed joint (non-load-bearing), a straight 90° cut with a wooden cover strip is a simpler alternative.

How do I fix the moulded handrail to WoodUp posts?

The 50x50 mm handrail slots into the top notch of the 60x60 mm and 70x70 mm posts in the WoodUp range. Fixing is done by through-screwing from underneath the post (concealed screw) or with concealed brackets depending on the configuration. For corners, cut the handrail at 45° and assemble with an internal glued reinforcing batten. Always pre-drill to avoid splitting, especially with beech.
