Installation advice
The turned profile makes joint pre-drilling more delicate than on a square post - the recesses of the turning locally reduce the section. Always drill perpendicularly on a flat face (base or top of the post) and avoid tightening points in the turning recesses to prevent splitting the wood. Fix the post to the floor with a floor plate compatible with the 70x70mm section (not included). Apply the finish before fitting the infill elements to cover all faces of the crafted profile.
Maintenance and protection
The turned profile multiplies the exposed surfaces - a thorough finish is essential, particularly in the recesses. Apply the oil-wax or varnish with a fine brush, paying close attention to the swellings and grooves of the turning. For heavy use (frequently used staircase), varnish provides the best durability. Clean with soapy water and a soft cloth - avoid abrasive sponges that would scratch the polished profile.
WoodUp tip
Important before purchasing: the turned profile is machined from a 70x70mm square blank — the section at the narrowest points (grooves) is reduced, which makes this post slightly less rigid than a straight post of the same section. Favour a maximum spacing of 1.2m (rather than 1.5m) for spans subjected to use by children or heavy traffic. Apply the finish before installation, paying particular attention to the recesses of the turned profile, which are less accessible once in place. For a consistent result, use turned balusters (ID 628) in the same wood species.
Frequently asked questions
Can this turned post be paired with straight square balusters?
Technically yes, but the result is stylistically mixed - a turned post with straight rectangular balusters creates a contrast between a classic profile and a contemporary infill. For full consistency in traditional style, pair this turned post with turned balusters Turned solid wood baluster. For a modern interpretation of the classic style, the combination of turned post and straight balusters is a deliberate decorative choice.
Which wood species should I choose for a white-painted interior staircase?
Beech is the recommended wood species for a white-painted finish. Its very fine and uniform grain absorbs the primer and paint evenly, without the knots or grain variations of fir or pine that can show through a light paint coat. For a pure and long-lasting white, choose beech + alkyd primer + 2 coats of satin acrylic paint.
How can a turned post be fixed to the floor without a visible floor plate?
For an invisible fixing, use a floor plate recessed into the floor (sunken plate). The base of the post rests on the plate, whose screwed head sits flush with the finished floor level. This type of plate requires routing into the floor - plan this work before laying the floor covering if possible. The other option is a threaded rod set into concrete with a nut integrated into the base of the post - a stronger but irreversible solution.
Is this turned post compatible with WoodUp beech balustrade kits (Beech balustrade kit 2m + 2 posts, Beech balustrade kit 1m + 1 post)?
Partially. The WoodUp beech balustrade kits use square posts with a 70x70mm section - the section is identical but the profile is square. If you would like turned posts in a beech kit, order this turned post separately and adapt the fixings. The 50x50mm handrail included in the beech kits is compatible with the head of the 70x70mm turned posts.
What is the usable height of the turned post after floor fixing?
The turned post measures 1,200 mm overall. After being set into a standard floor plate or screwed onto a base, the visible usable height is approximately 1,050 to 1,100 mm depending on the fixing solution. The handrail slots into the upper notch of the post: the finished height of the balustrade is 1,000 mm, in accordance with standard NF P01-012 for interior landings.
