Solid Wood Turned Half-Post H 120cm – Wall Support for Traditional Balustrade
This half-post turned in solid wood measures 120 cm in height with a section of 70x34 mm. Its turned profile, characteristic of classic traditional balustrades, is identical to the visible face of a full turned post — which guarantees perfect visual continuity between free-standing posts and wall posts in the same installation. Available in beech, fir or pine, it pairs with full turned solid wood posts Turned solid wood post and turned solid wood balusters Turned solid wood baluster to create a balustrade with an entirely worked profile.
Its half-thickness section (34mm) allows it to be placed directly against a wall or stair stringer, with its flat face in contact with the surface. Supplied unfinished raw, it accepts paint, wood stain or oil depending on the desired finish. Reserved for indoor use only — beech, fir and pine are not suitable for permanent outdoor exposure without enhanced treatment.

Installation advice
Fix the half-post against the wall or stringer using long wood screws (≥ 80mm) and suitable wall plugs. Plan for 3 fixing points distributed along the height to ensure rigidity. The flat face must be in direct and flush contact with the wall — check the wall is plumb before fixing. A packing shim may be necessary if the wall is not perfectly vertical. Apply the finish before fixing to easily cover the visible face of the turned profile.
Maintenance and protection
Indoors, apply varnish (2-3 coats) or oil-wax before fitting. The turned profile has recesses that are difficult to reach once installed — finishing before fitting is strongly recommended. Clean with mild soapy water. Check the tightening of the wall fixing screws once a year.
Frequently asked questions
Is this turned half-post compatible with full turned posts Turned solid wood post?
Yes. The turned profile of the half-post is identical to that of the full post — the visible face is the same. In the same installation, free-standing posts Turned solid wood post and wall posts Turned solid wood half-post form a visually coherent set with no profile or template mismatch. Order both in the same wood species to ensure colour consistency.
Can this turned half-post be paired with straight (non-turned) spindles?
Technically yes, but the result is mixed — a turned profile post with straight rectangular spindles creates a stylistic contrast. For maximum visual consistency, pair turned posts (Turned solid wood half-post, Turned solid wood post) with turned balusters Turned solid wood baluster. Straight spindles Straight solid wood spindle pair better with straight square posts Straight solid wood post 120cm.
How many wall half-posts are needed for a 2-metre balustrade?
For a 2m balustrade starting and ending against a wall: 2 wall half-posts (one at each end) + no full floor post if the walls are load-bearing at both ends. If the installation is open on one side (open staircase side), replace the half-post on that side with a full post Turned solid wood post with floor plate.
Can turned beech be easily painted white?
Yes. Fine-grained beech is the wood species that gives the best results with white paint. Apply a bonding primer with a brush, working it into the recesses of the turned profile, then two coats of satin acrylic paint. For the deep recesses of the turning, use a fine brush to avoid missed spots. The result is clean and even on beech.
