Solid Wood Straight Baluster H 95cm Section 50x18mm - 4 Species for Balustrade

This straight solid wood baluster forms the vertical infill of wooden balustrades and guardrails. Available in four species - douglas fir, silver fir, pine or beech - it measures 95 cm in height with a section of 50x18 mm. Sold individually, it allows you to freely compose the infill of a bespoke balustrade or to replace a damaged baluster in an existing installation.

The 50x18 mm section is the standard format for the WoodUp spare parts range: it fits directly into the 18x15 mm grooves of the bottom rails Solid wood bottom rail and into the rebates of the handrails on silver fir balustrade kits. The spacing between balusters must not exceed 11 cm - a regulatory requirement for landing guardrails (NF P01-012). Over a width of 1 metre, allow approximately 6 balusters of 50mm with 11 cm spacing.

  • Sold individually - for complete composition or one-off replacement

Installation advice

Calculating the number of balusters: To calculate the number of balusters required, divide the usable length of your balustrade by (baluster width + maximum spacing): 50mm + 110mm = 160mm per baluster. Over 2 metres, allow approximately 2000 ÷ 160 → 12 balusters. Always check the actual spacing before final fixing.

Installation: Insert the balusters into the groove of the bottom rail (the 18mm depth ensures secure retention). Distribute the spacing evenly along the full length before fixing the handrail. For balustrades without a groove, fix the balusters using discreet lateral screwing or concealed brackets. Always pre-drill to prevent splitting at the head of the baluster.

Finish: Apply the finish before installation to easily cover all faces. Once the balusters are in place, access to the side faces is difficult. Two coats of oil-wax or varnish applied by brush cover the wood perfectly before insertion.

Maintenance and protection

Without a finish, raw wood stains and reacts to moisture. Indoors, a varnish or oil-wax is sufficient. Outdoors (douglas fir only recommended), apply an outdoor saturating oil and renew every 2 years. Silver fir and pine left untreated outdoors will grey and deteriorate within a few months — an outdoor woodstain is essential.

WoodUp tip

What to know before buying: the straight baluster slots into the groove of the bottom rail (18x15mm) — check compatibility before ordering if you are using a rail from another brand. The maximum regulatory spacing between balusters is 11cm (NF P01-012) for guardrails in areas accessible to children. To calculate the number of balusters for your span: length ÷ (50mm + 110mm) = number of balusters. In douglas fir, this baluster is suitable for sheltered outdoor use with an appropriate finish. Other species are for indoor use only.

Frequently asked questions

How many balusters are needed for 1 metre of balustrade?

Over 1 metre of usable length with 11 cm spacing between 50mm balusters: 1000 ÷ (50 + 110) = 6.25 → 6 balusters. Check the actual spacing: 6 balusters over 1m give (1000 - 6x50) ÷ 7 spaces ≥ 100 mm spacing - slightly below the regulatory 11 cm, which is compliant.

Is this baluster compatible with WoodUp silver fir balustrade kits?

Yes. The WoodUp silver fir balustrade kits (Silver fir balustrade kit 2m + 1 post, Silver fir balustrade kit 1m without post, Silver fir balustrade kit 2m without post) use balusters with a 50x20mm section. The baluster (Straight solid wood baluster) in 50x18mm section is slightly thinner: it fits into the rebates of the silver fir kits with a 2mm clearance, which can be filled with a dab of wood glue if needed. For perfect compatibility, check the groove width of your bottom rail.

Can douglas fir balusters be used outdoors without treatment?

Douglas fir outdoors without treatment naturally resists for several years thanks to its class 3 rating. It gradually turns grey but retains its mechanical properties. To maintain the original honey tone, apply an outdoor wood saturator upon installation and renew annually. Without treatment, greying is natural and structurally harmless.

What is the difference between the 50x18mm baluster Straight solid wood baluster and the 95x18mm straight board?

the straight board (Straight balustrade board 95cm) is 95mm wide compared to 50mm for the baluster (Straight solid wood baluster). The board is used for infill with wider gaps between elements or for a vertical panel effect. The baluster is the traditional vertical spindle. Both have the same height (95cm) and the same thickness (18mm) - they are used with the same 18mm grooved bottom rails.

How do I calculate the number of balusters for a balustrade?

The baluster measures 50 mm wide. The maximum regulatory spacing between balusters is 110 mm (standard NF P01-012). For a 2-metre balustrade with 100 mm spacing: 2000 ÷ 150 (baluster + clearance) = approximately 13 balusters. In practice, WoodUp kits already include the correct number of balusters for standard lengths. For a bespoke length, WoodUp calculates the exact quantity at the time of order.
