1 m solid fir balustrade kit without post - DIY indoor module

This unfinished solid fir balustrade kit covers a 1-metre run and has an assembled height of 1.02 m. With no post included, it is designed as an extension module or for configurations where posts are already in place: a mezzanine corner, a connection to a staircase or a small 1 m landing. It is fully compatible with the 2 m + 1 post kit and the 2 m kit without a post in the WoodUp range. A balustrade is also known as a guardrail.

The kit includes a 60x50 mm top rail, a 50x35 mm bottom rail, 6 spindles measuring 50x20 mm with integrated rebates, and joining dowels. The components are pre-measured and machined for assembly without specialist tools. The wood is supplied unfinished and untreated: applying a finish (oil, varnish or wood stain) before or after assembly is recommended to protect the fir from ambient moisture and knocks.

Fir range: this kit is part of the fir balustrade range (60 x 60 mm post, 60 x 50 mm top rail, 50 x 20 mm spindles). It cannot be combined with the beech balustrade kits, which have different component sizes (70 x 70 mm post, 50 x 50 mm handrail, 65 x 20 mm spindles). Use the same range throughout the installation.

Installation advice

This kit fits between two existing posts or between a post and a wall. The top and bottom rails rest against the posts or are fixed to them with dowels. Position the 6 spindles in the rebates of the bottom and top rails before final fixing. Keep the spacing between spindles to a maximum of 11 cm.

To build a complete 3 m run, you can combine this 1 m kit with a 2 m kit and one post. The sections join with dowels at the ends of the top rails for a continuous appearance without a visible joint. Use a spirit level to ensure the top rail is horizontal.

Care and protection

Apply a protective finish before or after assembly: 2 to 3 coats of floor varnish for maximum scratch resistance, or hardwax oil, reapplied every 2 years, for a natural look. Unfinished, untreated fir quickly picks up dirt and marks in high-traffic areas. Once finished, routine cleaning with soapy water is sufficient. Estimated lifespan: 15 years or more in a dry indoor setting with a suitable finish.

WoodUp tip

Before you buy: this kit does not include a post. It is designed for configurations where the ends meet a wall or an existing post, or to extend an existing kit. If your run requires an intermediate or end post, order it separately (ID 88 in fir). The assembled height of 1.02 m complies with NF P01-012 for indoor landings. Apply the finish before assembly to protect the grooves and the spindle contact surfaces, which will be inaccessible once the kit is assembled.

How many posts are needed for a 1 m balustrade kit?

This kit does not include a post. It fits between two posts already in place, or between a post and a wall. If you are starting from scratch with a 1 m run, order a 60x60 mm straight fir post, H 1.2 m for the free end. The other end can be anchored to an existing post, a wall or a stair stringer.

Is this 1 m kit compatible with the 2 m fir kit?

Yes. The top and bottom rails have identical dimensions (60x50 mm and 50x35 mm). They join end to end with wooden dowels or metal brackets. A consistent appearance is possible if the parts come from the same batch (natural colour may vary between batches).

Can the fir be painted white for a contemporary look?

Yes. After a light sanding with 150-grit abrasive, unfinished fir takes interior wood paint well. Apply an adhesion primer, followed by 2 coats of satin or matt paint. For a long-lasting white finish, choose an impact-resistant alkyd or acrylic paint. The result is a neat, even finish on the fine-grained fir.

What is the maximum spacing between spindles to comply with the standard?
