2 m Fir Balustrade Kit Without Posts – Handrail, Bottom Rail and 12 Balusters

This solid fir balustrade kit spans 2 metres and has an assembled height of 1.02 m. Unlike the 2 m kit with one post, it contains no post: the infill components (handrail, bottom rail and 12 balusters) are supplied separately, so you can position the posts to suit the installation. Assembly requires no mortise-and-tenon joints: rebates are machined directly into the components to make positioning the balusters straightforward. The balustrade is also known as a guardrail.

This modular kit can be combined with straight fir posts, 1 m kits or other 2 m kits to create balustrades of custom lengths. Supplied as unfinished, untreated wood, it can be finished to your taste before or after assembly with oil, varnish, wood stain or paint.

Fir range: this kit is part of the fir balustrade range (60 x 60 mm posts, 60 x 50 mm handrail, 50 x 20 mm balusters). It cannot be combined with beech balustrade kits, which have different component dimensions (70 x 70 mm posts, 50 x 50 mm handrail, 65 x 20 mm balusters). Use one range throughout the installation.

Installation advice

Start by positioning the posts (not included) no more than 1.5 m apart. Secure them with mounting plates suited to the supporting surface. Then slide the balusters into the rebates in the bottom rail, check the spacing (≤ 11 cm) and fit the handrail. Dowel the assembly together following the supplied instructions. For end-to-end connections between two kits, use metal brackets or long dowels to form a rigid joint.

Apply your chosen finish before or after assembly. Finishing before assembly makes hidden surfaces easier to reach and gives a more even result.

Care and protection

Unfinished fir needs a protective finish before use. Two to three coats of floor varnish provide the best resistance in high-traffic areas. Hardwax oil suits less heavily used spaces and is easy to reapply. Clean with soapy water, without solvents. Check the condition of the dowels and joints once a year.

The integrated rebate system simplifies assembly but requires a specific order: fit the balusters into the bottom rail before attaching the handrail. What is the difference between this and the 2 m fir balustrade kit with one post?

This 2 m kit without posts is intended for installations where posts are already in place or ordered separately. The 2 m kit with one post includes a 60 x 60 mm post, 1.2 m high, for a complete installation. The infill components (handrail, bottom rail and balusters) are identical in both kits.

How many posts are needed for a 4-metre balustrade?

For a 4 m span using two of these 2 m kits without posts, allow for at least 3 posts: one at each end and one in the middle. If one end is fixed to a wall, 2 posts are sufficient. Space posts no more than 1.5 m apart to meet stability requirements.

Is this kit compatible with turned or square posts?

The handrail and bottom rail in this kit are designed for the 60 x 60 mm square posts in WoodUp’s fir range. For turned posts or posts with different dimensions, check that the connecting notches are compatible. Fir components, including straight and turned posts, are available separately from Woodup.

Can the handrail be cut down to fit a span of less than 2 m?

Yes, fir is easy to cut with a saw. If you shorten the rail to less than 2 m, remove the surplus balusters and check that the spacing between those remaining does not exceed 11 cm. Work out how many balusters to remove based on the final length: allow for one baluster approximately every 16 cm over 2 m.

Does this fir balustrade kit meet the standards for a mezzanine balustrade?

Yes. The assembled height of 1.02 m and baluster spacing (≤ 11 cm) meet the requirements of French standard NF P01-012 for indoor landing balustrades. For mezzanines used by children, check that no intermediate horizontal rail makes climbing easier. This kit has no such rail, so it complies. The height of 1.02 m also complies with Article R111-15 of the French Construction Code for landing balustrades.
