Solid Wood Bottom Rail – Interior Balustrade Component in Pine, Fir, Beech or Douglas Fir

The solid wood bottom rail is the lower horizontal piece of a balustrade, on which the balusters rest and are fixed. It forms the structural link between the posts and the infill elements, and directly determines the overall solidity. This model is designed exclusively for interior use — floor-level balustrades, walkways, mezzanines — and is not suitable for outdoor installation without appropriate additional protection.

Available in four species (pine, fir, beech, douglas fir) and three lengths (100, 150 or 200 cm), it fits into a balustrade system built piece by piece. Its 50x30 mm section and calibrated groove of 18 mm wide x 15 mm deep allow the insertion of matching tenon balusters. The piece is delivered unfinished, untreated: a finish (oil, woodstain or paint) is required before or after assembly.

Each species has distinct technical and visual characteristics. The choice depends as much on the intended use as on the desired aesthetic — details by species are given in the table below.

Key points

Structural component: provides the link between posts and balusters, determines the rigidity of the balustrade

Calibrated 18x15 mm groove: compatible with tenon balusters from the Woodup range (straight planks, turned balusters)

Four species to choose from: from economical fir to denser beech, depending on your budget and desired visual finish

Three available lengths: 100, 150 or 200 cm — to be cut according to the actual centre-to-centre distance of your posts

Unfinished delivery: fully compatible with all finishes (oil, tinted woodstain, paint, varnish)

Interior use only: suitable for floor-level balustrades, mezzanines and walkways in dry environments

Installation advice

Preparation. Measure the exact centre-to-centre distance between your posts before ordering the length. The bottom rail is fitted between the posts, at floor or deck level. Check that the supporting surface is flat and stable. Allow for a wood saw for length adjustments.

Fixing. Screw the bottom rail into the posts using wood screws suited to the chosen species. For beech, a dense wood, pre-drilling is recommended to avoid splitting and reduce screwing effort. In outdoor or damp conditions, use A2 or A4 stainless steel screws to prevent any risk of corrosion.

Finishing. Apply the chosen protection before final assembly if you want an even result on all faces, or after assembly for finishes applied in a single pass. Beech and fir absorb woodstains and oils well. Douglas fir, naturally resistant, can be left untreated indoors in dry conditions, but a finishing oil improves long-term durability.

Maintenance and protection

For interior use, the bottom rail is not subject to outdoor climatic constraints. Maintenance is limited to regular wiping with a damp soft cloth. Avoid abrasive products or high-pH cleaners that may damage the finish.

Recommended initial finish: the piece is delivered unfinished. A protective coat before use is strongly recommended to limit marks and make maintenance easier. Options depending on the desired finish:

  • Oil-wax: natural matt appearance, nourishes the wood, renewable every 2 to 3 years
  • Satin woodstain: light or opaque tint, good protection against abrasion
  • Varnish or lacquer: maximum resistance, suitable if the rail is subject to frequent friction
  • Paint: full coverage, compatible with all species after sanding with 120-grit

Frequently asked questions

How do you fix a solid wood bottom rail between two balustrade posts?

The bottom rail is screwed into the posts using wood screws, perpendicular to the post face. Always pre-drill to avoid splitting, particularly with beech. For a mortise-and-tenon assembly, insert the balusters into the groove of the bottom rail first, before assembling the whole unit between the posts. Use stainless steel screws with beech to avoid tannin reactions.

Is the bottom rail compatible with all balusters in the Woodup range?

It is compatible with balusters with a tenon of maximum 18 mm wide and 15 mm high, such as the straight planks and turned balusters in the Woodup range. Check the tenon dimensions before ordering if you are using balusters from another source. Balusters without a tenon are fixed differently (angled screwing or brackets).

Which wood species should you choose for an interior balustrade bottom rail?

The choice depends mainly on the desired visual finish and budget. Fir is the most accessible option, easy to paint or stain. Pine offers a more pronounced grain, suited to a natural or Scandinavian style. Beech is denser and gives a refined result after finishing, recommended if the balustrade is prominent and valued aesthetically. Douglas fir has a pronounced grain and a warm tone, with slightly greater natural resistance than the other species offered.

Can this bottom rail be used outdoors?

This bottom rail is primarily designed for interior use. Its groove, intended to receive the balusters, can retain water if directly exposed to the elements, which may encourage standing moisture and wood deformation.

For an exterior balustrade, it is generally preferable to use a horizontal cross rail screwed to the back of the spindles rather than a grooved rail. This solution limits water pooling and allows the structure to dry more quickly.

A suitable wood cross rail can be used, for example a 92x21 mm section in an exterior species (douglas fir, treated pine or durable timber).

Should the bottom rail be treated before or after assembly?

Both approaches are possible. Treating before assembly allows you to cover all faces, including those that will be inaccessible after assembly (groove base, hidden faces). Treating after assembly is suitable for quick finishes (paint, opaque woodstain) applied by brush to the entire balustrade in a single session. In all cases, apply at least one protective coat to the assembly areas.

What length of bottom rail should I order for my balustrade?

Measure the internal centre-to-centre distance between your posts (distance between inner faces). Choose the next size up from the three available lengths (100, 150 or 200 cm) and trim to size with a saw. Avoid joining two rails end to end in the same span: opt for a single piece to ensure the rigidity of the whole assembly.
