Solid Wood Bottom Rail - Interior Balustrade Component in Pine, Silver Fir, Beech or Douglas Fir

The solid wood bottom rail is the lower horizontal component of a balustrade, the piece on which the balusters rest and are fixed. It forms the structural connection between the posts and the infill elements, and directly determines the strength of the assembly. This model is designed exclusively for indoor use - floor-level guardrail, walkway, mezzanine - and is not suitable for outdoor installation without additional appropriate protection.

Available in four species (pine, silver fir, beech, douglas fir) and three lengths (100, 150 or 200 cm), it integrates into a balustrade system built piece by piece. Its section of 50x30 mm and its groove calibrated to 18 mm wide x 15 mm deep allow the insertion of matching tenon balusters. The piece is delivered raw, untreated: a finish (oil, woodstain or paint) is required before or after assembly.

Each species has distinct technical and visual characteristics. The choice depends as much on the intended use as on the desired aesthetic - species-specific details are shown in the table below.

Key points

Structural component: provides the connection between posts and balusters, determines the rigidity of the balustrade

Calibrated 18x15 mm groove: compatible with tenon balusters in the Woodup range (straight boards, turned balusters)

Four species to choose from: from economical silver fir to denser beech, according to budget and desired visual finish

Three available lengths: 100, 150 or 200 cm - to be cut according to the actual centre-to-centre distance of your posts

Delivered raw: fully compatible with all finishes (oil, tinted woodstain, paint, varnish)

Indoor use only: suitable for floor-level guardrails, mezzanines and walkways in dry environments

Installation advice

Preparation. Measure the exact centre-to-centre distance between your posts before ordering the length. The bottom rail is fitted between the posts, at floor or deck level. Check that the support is flat and stable. Have a wood saw ready for length adjustments.

Fixing. Screw the bottom rail into the posts using wood screws appropriate for the chosen species. For beech, a dense wood, pre-drilling is recommended to avoid splitting and to reduce the screwing effort. Outdoors or in damp conditions, use A2 or A4 stainless steel screws to prevent any risk of corrosion.

Finish. Apply the chosen protection before final assembly if you want an even result on all faces, or after assembly for finishes to be applied to the whole balustrade in a single pass. Beech and silver fir absorb woodstains and oils well. Douglas fir, naturally resistant, can be left raw indoors in dry conditions, but a finishing oil improves long-term durability.

Maintenance and protection

For indoor use, the bottom rail is not subject to outdoor climatic stress. Maintenance is limited to regular wiping with a soft damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products or high-pH cleaners, which can damage the finish.

Recommended initial finish: the piece is delivered raw. A protective finish before use is strongly advised to limit marking and make maintenance easier. Options according to desired result:

  • Oil-wax: natural matt appearance, nourishes the wood, renewable every 2 to 3 years
  • Satin woodstain: light or opaque tint, good protection against abrasion
  • Varnish or lacquer: maximum resistance, suitable if the rail is subject to frequent friction
  • Paint: full coverage, compatible with all species after sanding with 120-grit

WoodUp tip

What to know before buying: the bottom rail is the component that receives the balusters or spindles in its groove — it determines the spacing and retention of the infill. Check that your baluster section (18mm) is compatible with the 18x15mm groove of this model before ordering. Order the length immediately above your span and trim with a saw: a bottom rail is easier to cut down than to extend. Apply the finish before installation, particularly inside the groove, for even protection.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix a solid wood bottom rail between two balustrade posts?

The bottom rail is screwed into the posts using wood screws, perpendicular to the face of the post. Always pre-drill to avoid splits, particularly with beech. For a mortise-and-tenon assembly, insert the balusters into the groove of the bottom rail before assembling the whole between the posts. Use stainless steel screws on beech to avoid tannin reactions.

Is the bottom rail compatible with all balusters in the Woodup range?

It is compatible with balusters fitted with a tenon of maximum 18 mm wide and 15 mm in height, such as the straight boards and turned balusters in the Woodup range. Check the tenon dimensions before ordering if you are using balusters from another source. Balusters without a tenon are fixed differently (angled screwing or brackets).

Which species should I choose for an interior balustrade bottom rail?

The choice depends primarily on the desired visual result and budget. Silver fir is the most affordable option, easy to paint or stain. Pine offers a more pronounced grain, suited to a natural or Scandinavian style. Beech is denser and gives a refined result after finishing, recommended if the balustrade is visible and a focal point. Douglas fir has a pronounced grain and warm tone, with slightly greater natural resistance than the other species offered.

Can this bottom rail be used outdoors?

This bottom rail is primarily designed for indoor use. Its groove, intended to receive balusters, can retain water if directly exposed to the elements, which may encourage standing moisture and wood distortion.

For an outdoor balustrade, it is generally preferable to use a horizontal cross rail screwed to the back of the balusters rather than a grooved bottom rail. This solution limits water pooling and allows the structure to dry more quickly.

A suitable wood cross rail can be used, for example a 92x21 mm section in an outdoor species (douglas fir or durable class 3 timber).

Should the bottom rail be treated before or after assembly?

Both approaches are possible. Treating before assembly allows you to cover all faces, including those that will be inaccessible after assembly (groove base, hidden faces). Treating after assembly is suitable for quick finishes (paint, opaque woodstain) applied by brush to the entire balustrade in a single session. In all cases, apply at least one protective coat to the assembly areas.

What length of bottom rail should I order for my guardrail?

Measure the internal centre-to-centre distance between your posts (distance between inner faces). Choose the next length up from the three available (100, 150 or 200 cm) and trim with a saw. Avoid joining two rails end to end over a single span: prefer a single piece to ensure the rigidity of the assembly.
