This laminated beech balustrade kit covers a 1-metre span with a finished height of 1 metre. Unlike the 1 m + 1 post kit 1 m beech balustrade kit + 1 post, it comes with two posts, making it completely freestanding - no existing wall or stair stringer is needed for support. It can be installed on its own in the middle of a landing, at the corner of an open mezzanine or at the end of an indoor terrace. A balustrade is also called a railing.

Laminated beech has an even surface, fine grain and natural pinkish-white colour, making it easy to personalise with paint, wood stain or hardwax oil. Its construction from cross-layered strips limits warping caused by changes in indoor humidity. All kit components are pre-measured and ready to assemble, with post brackets included. You only need to provide floor fixings suited to the surface.

Beech range: this kit belongs to the laminated beech balustrade range (70 x 70 mm posts, 50 x 50 mm handrail, 65 x 20 mm spindles). It cannot be combined with fir balustrade kits, which have different sections (60 x 60 mm posts, 60 x 50 mm rail, 50 x 20 mm spindles). Use the same range throughout the installation.

Installation advice

Positioning: This kit rests on two posts, both of which must be fixed to the floor. Mark the balustrade line on the floor and use a pencil to mark the position of both posts. Before drilling, check that the distance between them matches the usable length of the bottom rail. A marking error at this stage is difficult to correct once the holes have been drilled.

Assembly: Assemble the balustrade flat before raising it. Position the bottom rail, insert the spindles while checking their spacing (≤ 11 cm), then attach the handrail. Fit the post brackets and secure the assembly with dowels. Raise the assembled balustrade, position it with a spirit level, and fix the brackets to the floor using fixings suitable for the surface.

Joining to an adjacent kit: If you combine this kit with a 2 m kit, join the rails end to end using metal brackets or long dowels passing through both sections. Lightly sand the joint to remove any visible step.

Care and protection

Apply a protective finish before first use. Unfinished laminated beech is easily marked by hands in high-traffic areas. Two to three coats of hard-wearing stair varnish provide maximum protection for a frequently used mezzanine. Hardwax oil suits less-used spaces and should be reapplied every 1 to 2 years. Clean regularly with soapy water, avoiding abrasives and chlorine-based products. Check the tightness of the floor-fixing screws once a year.

Can beech be left unfinished and untreated?

This is not recommended. Indoors, untreated beech absorbs dirt from hands, reacts to changes in humidity and stains easily. Even one coat of hardwax oil helps stabilise it and makes everyday care easier. Without a finish, the wood gradually darkens in areas of contact and loses its characteristic light appearance.
