Solid Wood Turned Post H 120cm Section 70x70mm – Traditional Style for Interior Balustrade

This turned solid wood post measures 120 cm in height with a section of 70x70 mm. Its lathe-worked profile, characteristic of classic traditional balustrades, gives it a refined and personalised appearance that plain square posts cannot offer. It is available in fir, pine or beech — three interior wood species with distinct shades: golden fir with a slight amber tint, pine slightly more pinkish, beech with a pinkish-white very fine grain.

Sold individually, it pairs with turned balusters Solid wood turned baluster, wall-mounted turned half-posts Solid wood turned half-post, bottom rails Solid wood bottom rail and moulded handrails Solid wood moulded handrail to compose a complete traditional balustrade with a worked profile. Supplied raw untreated, it accepts paint, stain, oil or varnish. Indoor use only — these species are not suitable for permanent outdoor exposure.

Installation advice

The turned profile makes assembly pre-drilling more delicate than on a square post — the grooves of the turning locally reduce the section. Always drill perpendicularly on a full face (foot or head of the post) and avoid clamping points in the turning grooves to avoid splitting the wood. Fix the post to the floor with a base plate compatible with the 70x70mm section (not included). Apply the finish before fitting the infill elements to cover all faces of the worked profile.

Maintenance and protection

The turned profile multiplies the exposed surfaces — a complete finish is essential, particularly in the recesses. Apply the oil-wax or varnish with a fine brush, paying particular attention to the swellings and grooves of the turning. For intensive use (heavily used staircase), varnish provides the best resistance. Clean with soapy water using a soft cloth — avoid abrasive sponges that would scratch the polished profile.

Frequently asked questions

Can this turned post be combined with straight square spindles?

Technically yes, but the result is stylistically mixed — a turned post with straight rectangular spindles creates a contrast between a classic profile and contemporary infill. For complete consistency in traditional style, pair this turned post with turned balusters Solid wood turned baluster. For a modern interpretation of the classic, the combination of turned post + straight spindles is a deliberate decorative option.

Which species to choose for an interior staircase painted white?

Beech is the recommended species for a white painted finish. Its very fine and uniform grain absorbs primer and paint evenly, without the knots or grain variations of fir or pine that can show through a light coat of paint. For a pure and durable white, choose beech + alkyd primer + 2 coats of satin acrylic paint.

How to fix a turned post to the floor without a visible base plate?

For an invisible fixing, use a recessed base plate set into the floor (buried base plate). The base of the post rests on the base plate whose screwed head is flush with the finished floor surface. This type of base plate requires routing into the floor — plan this machining before laying the floor covering if possible. The other option is a threaded rod set into the concrete with an integrated nut in the base of the post — a more solid but irreversible solution.

Is this turned post compatible with WoodUp beech balustrade kits (Beech balustrade kit 2m + 2 posts, Beech balustrade kit 1m + 1 post)?

Partially. WoodUp beech balustrade kits use square posts with a 70x70mm section — the section is identical but the profile is square. If you wish to have turned posts in a beech kit, order this turned post separately and adapt the fixings. The 50x50mm handrail from the beech kits is compatible with the head of the 70x70mm turned posts.
