120 cm solid wood turned half post - wall-mounted support for a traditional balustrade
This solid wood turned half post is 120 cm high with a 70x34 mm cross-section. Its turned profile, characteristic of traditional balustrades, is identical to the visible face of a full turned post. This gives freestanding posts and wall-mounted posts in the same installation a seamless appearance. Available in beech, fir or pine, it pairs with full turned posts Solid wood turned post and turned balusters Solid wood turned baluster to create a balustrade with a fully shaped profile. A balustrade is also known as a guardrail.
Its half-thickness cross-section (34 mm) allows it to be fitted directly against a wall or stair stringer, with its flat face against the supporting surface. Supplied unfinished and untreated, it can be painted, stained or oiled to achieve the desired finish. For indoor use only: beech, fir and pine are not suitable for permanent outdoor exposure without additional protective treatment.

Installation advice
Fix the half post against the wall or stringer using long wood screws (≥ 80 mm) and suitable wall plugs. Use 3 fixing points spaced along its height to ensure rigidity. The flat face must sit flush against the wall; check that the wall is plumb before fixing. A shim may be needed if the wall is not perfectly vertical. Apply the finish before fixing so you can easily coat the visible face of the turned profile.
Care and protection
For indoor use, apply 2–3 coats of floor varnish or an oil-wax finish before installation. The turned profile has recesses that are difficult to reach once installed, so finishing beforehand is strongly recommended. Clean with mild soapy water. Check the tightness of the wall-fixing screws once a year.
WoodUp tip
Before you buy: the turned half post must always be fitted against a wall or stringer; it is not freestanding. Its flat rear face must sit flush against the support along its full height to prevent movement or vibration. Apply the finish to every face before installation, including the rear: once screwed against the wall, it will be inaccessible to a brush. Pair it with a full turned post at the freestanding end for a consistent look.
Frequently asked questions
Is this turned half post compatible with full turned posts Solid wood turned post?
Yes. The half post has the same turned profile as the full post, so their visible faces match. In the same installation, freestanding posts Solid wood turned post and wall-mounted posts Solid wood turned half post form a visually consistent set, with no difference in profile or proportions. Order both in the same wood species to ensure a consistent colour.
Can this turned half post be paired with straight, unturned spindles?
Technically, yes, but the result mixes styles: a turned post alongside straight rectangular spindles creates a contrast. For the most consistent look, pair turned posts (Solid wood turned half post, Solid wood turned post) with turned balusters Solid wood turned baluster. Straight spindles Solid wood straight spindle work better with square straight posts 120 cm solid wood straight post.
How many wall-mounted half posts are needed for a 2-metre balustrade?
For a 2 m balustrade that starts and ends at a wall, use 2 wall-mounted half posts (one at each end) and no floor-mounted full post, provided both walls are load-bearing. If one end is freestanding, such as on the open side of a staircase, replace that half post with a full Solid wood turned post fitted with a floor mounting plate.
Is turned beech easy to paint white?
Yes. Fine-grained beech gives the best results when painted white. Apply an adhesion primer with a brush, working it into the recesses of the turned profile, then apply two coats of satin acrylic paint. Use a fine brush for the deeper recesses to avoid missed spots. The result is neat and even on beech.
Can the beech turned half post be painted white to match the balusters?
Yes, this is one of the most common uses for this profile. Laminated beech is ideal for a white painted finish: its grain is very fine, its surface even, and primers adhere well to it. Sand with 120-grit abrasive, apply a primer, then two coats of water-based gloss paint. The result matches the turned balusters in the same WoodUp range.
