Solid wood moulded slat for a balustrade
Solid wood moulded baluster H 95cm - 95x18mm section, decorative moulded profile, traditional classic style. Fir, pine, douglas fir or beech. Raw untreated, ready to paint or varnish. Sold individually. Max spacing 11cm between balusters (standard NF P01-012). Compatible with 18x15mm grooved bottom rail and WoodUp posts. Calculate the quantity: length ÷ 105mm = number of balusters. Beech and fir: interior use. Douglas fir: sheltered outdoor use possible depending on exposure.
Solid Wood Moulded Slat, H 95cm, 95x18mm Section – 4 Wood Species for Indoor Balustrades
This solid wood moulded slat is 95 cm high with a 95x18 mm section. Its moulded front profile – slightly rounded and grooved – gives it a more decorative appearance than the flat straight slat, while retaining the rigidity of a solid section 95mm wide. Available in spruce, pine, Douglas fir or beech, it can be paired with Solid wood bottom rails with an 18mm groove and 70x70mm posts from the WoodUp range. A balustrade is also called a guardrail.
Spacing between slats must not exceed 11 cm under standard NF P01-012. Sold individually, the slats let you create infill for a made-to-measure balustrade. The moulded slat is suitable for indoor balustrades (all wood species) and outdoor balustrades with appropriate treatment (primarily Douglas fir). Supplied unfinished and untreated.

Installation advice
Calculating the number of slats: For 2 metres with 95mm slats spaced 11cm apart: 2000 ÷ (95 + 110) = 9.75 → 10 slats. Check: (2000 - 10x95) ÷ 11 gaps = 95.4mm – compliant at ≤ 11 cm. For 1 metre: 1000 ÷ 205 = 4.87 → 5 slats, with actual spacing of (1000 - 5x95) ÷ 6 = 87mm – compliant.
Installation: Insert the slats into the groove in the bottom rail (15mm deep). The moulded profile faces forwards; orient all the slats the same way for a consistent appearance. Set out the spacing before permanently securing the railing. Apply the finish before installation to cover the moulded front profile and edges easily.
Care and protection
The moulded profile collects a little dust in its grooves; cleaning it with a soft brush once or twice a year is enough. Indoors, use a varnish or hardwax oil. For sheltered outdoor use (Douglas fir only), apply an exterior wood stain or oil, renewing it every 2 years. Spruce, pine and beech are not suitable for direct outdoor exposure.
WoodUp tip
Before you buy: the moulded slat has a more decorative appearance than the straight slat, but its moulded section is slightly thinner at the front. For balustrades used around young children, keep spacing to a maximum of 11cm and check that the slats cannot be climbed (smooth face towards the inside). Apply the finish before inserting the slats into the groove: the back face seated in the bottom rail will be inaccessible once fitted. Calculate the number of slats needed for your span: length ÷ (95mm + spacing).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the moulded slat (Solid wood moulded slat) and the straight slat (95cm straight balustrade slat)?
The straight slat (95cm straight balustrade slat) has a perfectly smooth, flat face. The moulded slat (Solid wood moulded slat) has a detailed front profile (slightly rounded with a decorative groove), giving it a more elaborate appearance typical of traditional or Haussmann-style balustrades. Both have the same section (95x18mm) and height (95cm); the choice is purely aesthetic. Both fit the same bottom rails with an 18mm groove.
Can the Douglas fir moulded slat be used outdoors in an exposed location?
Outdoors in an exposed location, Douglas fir naturally withstands the elements better than spruce or pine, but a moulded profile traps more moisture in its grooves than a flat face. For exposed outdoor use, apply an exterior saturating wood oil before installation, paying particular attention to the profile’s recesses, and renew it annually. In the long term, a flat straight slat is easier to maintain outdoors in an exposed location.
Can moulded and straight slats be combined in one balustrade?
Yes, technically. Both have the same section (95x18mm) and fit the same bottom rails. Aesthetically, combining them creates a contrast in relief: for example, all moulded faces pointing outwards and all flat faces pointing inwards. It is a deliberate decorative choice. Just check that the spacing between every slat remains ≤ 11 cm, whatever the combination.
Is this moulded profile easy to paint?
Yes. Fine-grained woods such as beech and pine take paint very well. Use a fine brush to cover the moulded profile on the front; a foam roller will not reach sufficiently into the grooves. Two coats of satin acrylic paint over a primer give a neat finish. Beech gives the best result on detailed profiles thanks to its very tight, even grain.
How do I calculate the number of moulded slats for a balustrade?
The moulded slat is 95 mm wide. To calculate the quantity, divide the total length of your balustrade by 95 mm, while observing the regulatory maximum spacing of 110 mm between elements (standard NF P01-012). For a 2-metre balustrade: 2000 ÷ 105 (slat + gap) = approximately 19 slats. Allow an extra 5 to 10% for cuts at the ends.
