This round solid fir handrail Ø50 mm comes with adjustable bichromated steel wall brackets and fixing screws. The kit is designed for straightforward installation, without having to source the accessories separately. The 21x5 mm groove slots onto the bracket heads to hold the handrail securely along its full length.

The 50 mm diameter provides a generous grip, well suited to family staircases and users seeking firm support. The cylindrical profile lets the hand glide smoothly from bottom to top. Fir, a pale, straight-grained softwood, is lightweight and easy to work with. It is for indoor use only: without specific protection, outdoor moisture would cause swelling and rapid deterioration.

Four lengths are available: 150, 200, 250 and 300 cm. The kit includes 2 brackets for lengths up to 250 cm and 3 brackets for the 300 cm length. The supplied screws are intended for securing the brackets to a wall. Additional fixings may be needed depending on the wall material: solid concrete, plasterboard or timber framing.

Installation advice

Use a spirit level to mark the handrail’s alignment on the wall. Mark the bracket positions: place the first 15–20 cm from the bottom of the handrail and the last the same distance from the top, then space the others evenly. The distance between brackets must not exceed 80 cm to prevent sagging.

Drill and fit the appropriate fixings for your wall type: concrete plugs, expanding plasterboard fixings or screws driven directly into a timber stud. Secure the brackets, slot the handrail groove onto the bracket heads, then tighten the locking screws without overtightening: fir is a softwood that can dent. Install the handrail 80 to 100 cm above the stair nosings.

Ideally, apply your chosen finish before installation, while every side of the handrail is accessible.

Care and protection

Before use, treat the unfinished fir with a suitable interior finish. Options depend on how it will be used:

Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance to rubbing, lasts 5 to 7 years
Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance; reapply every 2 to 3 years
Interior wood paint: apply after a pore-sealing primer for a coloured finish

For routine care, a slightly damp cloth is enough. Avoid abrasive products. An area that is gripped frequently may need its finish refreshed sooner: sand lightly with 180-grit paper before applying fresh varnish.

Yes. Unfinished fir is easy to paint after applying a pore-sealing primer. Use a satin or matt interior wood paint and apply at least two coats. For a smooth finish, sand lightly between coats with 180-grit paper. The smooth cylindrical surface of the round profile makes application with a foam roller or flat brush easier.

Is this handrail suitable for people with reduced mobility?

The Ø50 mm diameter provides a firm, secure grip. For people with reduced mobility, install the handrail 90 cm above the stair nosings and ensure it is continuous along the full length of the staircase. The adjustable brackets allow precise alignment even on slightly uneven walls.

Can two lengths be joined to exceed 300 cm?
