Flat fir handrail 70x28 mm — flat profile, 19x5 mm groove

This flat handrail in solid fir 70x28 mm is designed for staircases, balustrades and interior corridors. Its flat section of 70 mm height and 28 mm thickness provides a wide and stable grip, different from the cylindrical profile of round handrails. The longitudinal groove of 19x5 mm ensures fixing on standard wall or raking supports.

Fir is a lightweight resinous wood (approximately 450 kg/m³), easy to cut and finish on site. Supplied raw and sanded, it accepts all types of interior finish: varnish, oil, stain or paint. It is reserved for indoor use only — outdoor moisture would cause warping and accelerated deterioration without a suitable specific treatment.

Four lengths are available: 150, 200, 250 and 300 cm. All can be cut to size with a saw. Fixing supports are not supplied — they must be compatible with the 19x5 mm groove, which differs from the 21x5 mm groove on other profiles in the range. Check this point before ordering if you already have supports installed.

Installation advice

First check that your supports are compatible with the 19x5 mm groove of this reference (not 21x5 mm). Position the supports at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two fixing points. For lengths up to 200 cm, 2 supports are sufficient. For 250 cm and above, allow for an intermediate support.

Fix the supports with screws appropriate to the wall substrate — concrete anchor, expansion plasterboard plug or screws directly into a timber stud. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the step nosing or finished floor level. Engage the groove into the support heads, then tighten without overtightening (fir is soft and marks easily).

If cutting is required, use a fine-tooth saw to obtain a clean edge. Sand the cut end with 120-grit before applying the finish, to protect the exposed wood at the ends.

Maintenance and protection

Raw fir must be treated before regular use. It is recommended to apply the first coat of finish before installation, while the piece is still accessible on all faces — including the groove and the ends. Options depending on the desired result:

  • Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats after light sanding between coats, optimum resistance to friction, durability 5 to 7 years
  • Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance, renewal every 2 to 3 years
  • Interior wood stain: penetrates the wood, tinting possible, renewal every 3 to 5 years
  • Interior wood paint: after pore-filling primer, for a coloured finish

For routine maintenance, regular dusting and wiping with a slightly damp cloth are sufficient. Do not clean with large amounts of water. Periodically check the tightness of the retaining screws on the supports.

WoodUp tip

What to know before buying: the flat 70x28 mm profile provides a wide and stable grip, suitable for high-traffic staircases. Compatible with WoodUp 21x5 mm groove supports. Wall fixing screws not supplied. Treat all faces before installation, including inside the lower groove. Indoor use only.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a flat 70x28 mm profile and a moulded or round profile?

The flat profile provides an over-the-top grip, with the palm resting flat on the 70 mm surface. This is a different hold from round profiles (cylindrical grip) or moulded profiles (lateral grip). The flat profile is often used on wall-mounted balustrades or handrails where a clean, linear aesthetic is desired. It is also easier to paint evenly thanks to its flat faces.

Is the 19x5 mm groove compatible with standard market supports?

Yes, but please note: the groove on this reference measures 19x5 mm, which differs from the 21x5 mm groove found on the majority of other handrails in the range. Before purchasing supports separately, check that they are designed for a 19 mm wide groove. The supports available on Woodup for this reference are specified in the accessories section.

Can this handrail be cut to an intermediate length?

Yes. Solid fir is easy to cut. Use a fine-tooth saw to avoid splintering on the visible faces. After cutting, sand the end with 120-grit, then apply a coat of finish to the ends to protect the exposed wood. The flat section makes right-angle cuts easier compared to round handrails.

Is this handrail suitable for a high-traffic staircase?

Fir is a softwood (density ~450 kg/m³) that can mark under heavy use or repeated impact. A polyurethane varnish finish significantly limits surface wear. For a high-traffic staircase, beech or oak offer considerably greater resistance. This reference is well suited to domestic staircases under normal daily use.

What installation height is recommended for an interior handrail?

For a domestic staircase, the recommended height is between 80 and 100 cm measured from the step nosing. For a corridor or landing, the height is measured from the finished floor level. For people with reduced mobility, a height of 90 cm is generally recommended, ensuring continuity without interruption along the full length of the handrail.

Why choose fir rather than a denser wood such as beech?

Fir is significantly lighter and more affordable than beech. It is easy to cut and finish, making it accessible for DIY projects. On the other hand, it is a softwood that marks more easily. Beech should be preferred for high-traffic staircases or interiors where abrasion resistance is a priority. For standard domestic use, fir is a suitable and economical choice.
