Made-to-measure wooden mid-flight quarter-turn staircase
This made-to-measure mid-flight quarter-turn staircase is built to your dimensions in fir, laminated beech or laminated oak. It turns 90° halfway up, between two straight flights.
Choose whether it turns left or right as you ascend, then enter the finished-floor-to-finished-floor height, the lower-flight footprint length (L1), the upper-flight footprint length (L2), the width and the stairwell opening dimensions. Tread and stringer thickness (30 or 40 mm), stringer type, risers, banister and finish complete the configuration.
After you order, WoodUp sends you a construction plan and a 3D view for approval. Manufacturing begins only after you approve them, and the staircase is delivered 8 to 10 weeks later, as a kit or pre-assembled.

When should you choose a mid-flight quarter-turn staircase?
A mid-flight quarter-turn staircase runs along two walls in an L shape: a lower flight, the turn, then an upper flight. It suits spaces where neither the available floor length nor the stairwell opening allows the turn to be placed right at the bottom or top. The two footprint lengths, L1 and L2, are each measured along their respective walls.
The turning direction is determined as you ascend: a left-turning mid-flight quarter-turn staircase turns towards your left hand halfway up. The position of the upstairs stairwell opening determines the length of the upper flight.
For the finish, unfinished wood lets you varnish or paint the staircase yourself, while natural varnish, white limed or grey finishes give you a staircase that is already protected.
Installation tips
Taking measurements: use the WoodUp measurement guide. Measure the finished-floor-to-finished-floor height, including floor coverings downstairs and upstairs; the available footprint lengths for the lower flight (L1) and upper flight (L2); the width; the stairwell opening dimensions; and the floor slab thickness. If in doubt, attach the completed guide, plans or photos at the final step of the configurator.
Delivery: a staircase delivered as a kit is assembled on site following the construction plan. The pre-assembled version reduces work on site but requires sufficient access to bring the sections into the house.
Installation: secure the staircase according to the approved plan, checking that the stringers are plumb and the treads level. Allow at least two people for assembly.
Care and protection
An unfinished staircase must be protected before use: two to three coats of staircase varnish will withstand foot traffic and rubbing. Varnished or stained finishes can be cared for with a slightly damp cloth, without abrasive cleaners.
Frequently asked questions
What is a mid-flight quarter-turn staircase?
This is an L-shaped staircase that turns 90° halfway up, between the lower and upper flights. It is also called a mid-flight quarter-turn staircase. It differs from a bottom quarter-turn staircase, which turns at the start, and a top quarter-turn staircase, which turns at the end.
What dimensions are needed for a mid-flight quarter-turn staircase?
You need two floor lengths: the footprint of the lower flight (L1) and that of the upper flight (L2), measured along each wall. You also need the finished-floor-to-finished-floor height, width, stairwell opening dimensions and floor slab thickness. The WoodUp measurement guide shows where to measure each dimension.
Where should the stairwell opening be positioned for a quarter-turn staircase?
The stairwell opening sits above the upper flight, and its dimensions determine the headroom above the steps. Enter its length and width in the configurator: WoodUp takes them into account when designing the staircase and checks the project before sending you the plan.
How is the price of a made-to-measure mid-flight quarter-turn staircase calculated?
The configurator calculates the price from your measurements and options: wood species, tread and stringer thickness, stringer type, risers, banister, upper-floor balustrade, finish and delivery as a kit or pre-assembled. The price updates with each choice, before you order.
Which wood species should I choose for a made-to-measure wooden staircase?
Fir is the lightest and most economical option, often chosen for painting. Laminated beech is harder, with a subtle grain. Laminated oak has the most pronounced grain and suits natural varnished finishes.
How long does it take to receive a made-to-measure staircase?
Allow 8 to 10 weeks after the plans are approved. After you order, WoodUp reviews the project, then sends you a construction plan and a 3D view to approve and sign. Manufacturing then begins, and delivery is arranged by appointment.
