The BAVAT staircase in laminated oak is an upper quarter-turn staircase in the Standard range, designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 regular treads + 1 landing nosing (14 rises in total). It is 80 cm wide, with a recommended stairwell opening of 273x82 cm, a rise of 20 cm, a going of 19 cm and a tread cross-section of 210x30 mm.

Laminated oak is the most durable wood in the BAVAT range: denser and more wear-resistant than beech or fir. Delivered in 4 packages. The handrail is available as an option. The right- or left-hand orientation cannot be reversed and must be specified when ordering. The oak is supplied unfinished and must be finished before use.

Installation advice

Check the footprint (273 cm) and stairwell opening (273x82 cm) before ordering. Choose the orientation carefully: it cannot be changed. Always pre-drill oak before inserting screws; this very hard wood will split without pilot holes. At least two people are needed. The handrail can be added after assembly. Apply the finish once installation is complete.

Care and protection

Apply 2–3 coats of stair varnish before first use. Although naturally durable, unfinished oak absorbs stains without protection. Its naturally warm colour can be preserved with oak hardwax oil or enhanced with a tinted stair varnish. Reapply every 5–7 years, depending on use.

Choose the BAVAT Oak when durability matters more than price. Laminated oak (700 kg/m³) withstands wear better than beech (680 kg/m³) and much better than fir (420 kg/m³). For a heavily used main staircase or a home with pets, this difference in density means a noticeably longer service life between refinishing.

Before you buy: laminated oak requires particular care when screwing. Without pre-drilling, screws will split the wood. Use HSS drill bits with a diameter equal to 70% of the screw diameter. This precaution applies to every component, including the treads and quarter-turn section.

What is the difference between the BAVAT Oak and the BAVAT Beech?

The dimensions are identical (280 cm floor-to-floor height, 13 treads plus landing nosing, 20 cm rise, 19 cm going, 273 cm footprint and 273x82 cm stairwell opening). The difference is the wood: oak (700 kg/m³) is harder and more durable than beech (680 kg/m³), with a more pronounced grain and a warmer colour. Does oak develop a patina over time?

Yes. Without treatment, unfinished oak becomes more golden at the surface over time due to light and oxidation. A clear stair varnish preserves its original colour. Hardwax oil or an oak wood finish enriches and deepens the colour. These natural, desirable changes add character to the staircase without affecting its mechanical properties.

Can the BAVAT Oak be painted white?

Technically yes, but painting laminated oak hides the natural grain for which it was chosen. If you want a white finish, the less expensive BAVAT Fir is more suitable. For oak, choose a clear or tinted finish that brings out the grain.

Can the BAVAT Oak handrail be fitted after assembly?

Yes. The handrail is optional and can be installed after the staircase has been assembled. On an upper quarter-turn staircase, the handrail is not reversible: its orientation must match that of the staircase ordered. Fixings are supplied with the handrail.

Can the BAVAT Oak be trimmed to size?

Yes. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the stringers can be trimmed according to the cutting chart in the instructions. For oak, use a circular saw with a blade suitable for hardwood; do not use a jigsaw, as it would produce an uneven cut. Check the floor-to-floor height after the floors and ceilings have been finished before making any cuts.
