Installation advice
Preparation: Choose the orientation (left or right) before ordering. Check the footprint of 273 cm in the direction of ascent. If a handrail is planned, order it before starting: the BAVAT handrail is installed simultaneously with the staircase.
Support post: Position and fix the post first, before assembling the top quarter-turn module. Check its plumb carefully — it determines the stability of the entire structure at the turn.
Assembly: Follow the order indicated in the instructions: stringers → quarter turn (with post) → steps of the straight flight → steps of the quarter turn. Two people are required for handling, particularly for the oak stringers.
Finishing: Apply the protective treatment preferably before fitting to treat the hidden faces. On oak, allow 2 to 3 coats of varnish.
Maintenance and protection
The glued laminated oak is delivered raw. Apply a protective finish before first use.
- Aqua-polyurethane staircase varnish: 2 to 3 coats, renewal every 5 to 7 years
- Oil-wax: natural finish enhancing the grain of the oak, annual renewal
- Polyurethane varnish: shine, impact resistance
Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH-neutral product. Recommended humidity: 45 to 65%. Check the tightness of fixings once a year.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the BAVAT CHÊNE and the BAVAT HÊTRE?
Both models have the same geometry: top quarter turn, width 80 cm, height 280 cm, footprint 273 cm, section 210×30 mm, 4 parcels. The difference is the wood species: the BAVAT HÊTRE has a regular grain and a light, slightly pinkish hue; the BAVAT CHÊNE offers a more pronounced grain and a warmer, golden tone. Oak is generally slightly more expensive.
What is a top quarter-turn staircase?
A top quarter-turn staircase makes a 90° turn at the top of the flight, just before reaching the landing. To be distinguished from the bottom quarter turn, which turns at the start. This type is useful when the stairwell opening is not aligned with the direction of ascent, or to turn towards a corridor upon arriving at the upper floor.
What is the support post included in the kit for?
The support post takes the mechanical loads at the top quarter-turn module. It must be positioned and fixed before assembling the steps of the turn. Its plumb is critical: a post that is out of plumb can cause creaking and instability throughout the staircase.
Can a handrail be added after assembling the BAVAT CHÊNE?
No, for the interior handrail. It must be ordered separately and installed at the same time as the staircase. If you have already assembled the staircase without a handrail, contact WoodUp customer service to find out about exterior handrail options that can be fitted afterwards.
Can the BAVAT CHÊNE be cut down in height?
The staircase can be cut from the bottom to adjust the floor-to-floor height if it is less than 280 cm. Check the permissible cutting range with WoodUp customer service before ordering.
