BAVAT Quarter-Turn Top Staircase – Glued-Laminated Oak, 280 cm, Standard Range
The BAVAT staircase in glued-laminated oak is a top quarter-turn staircase from the Standard range, designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 straight treads + 1 landing nosing (14 rises in total). The width is 80 cm, the recommended stairwell opening is 273x82 cm, the riser height is 20 cm, the tread depth is 19 cm and the tread section is 210x30 mm.
Glued-laminated oak is the most durable timber species in the BAVAT range – denser and more resistant to wear than beech or fir. Delivered in 4 packages. The handrail is available as an option. The orientation (right or left) is non-reversible and must be specified at the time of ordering. The oak is delivered raw; finishing is required before use.

Installation advice
Check the footprint (273 cm) and the stairwell opening (273x82 cm) before ordering. Determine the orientation – this is final. Pre-drill systematically on oak before any screwing – oak is a very hard wood that will split without a pilot hole. Minimum two people. The handrail can be added after assembly. Apply the finish after complete installation.
Maintenance and protection
Apply a 2–3 coat staircase varnish before first use. Raw oak, although naturally resistant, absorbs stains without protection. Its natural warm colour can be preserved with an oak oil-wax or enhanced with a tinted varnish. Renewal every 5–7 years depending on traffic.
WoodUp tip
The BAVAT Oak is the choice to make when durability takes priority over budget. Glued-laminated oak (700 kg/m³) resists wear better than beech (680 kg/m³) and far better than fir (420 kg/m³). For a main staircase in a house with heavy traffic or with pets, this difference in density translates into a notably longer service life between finishes.
Worth knowing before buying: glued-laminated oak is the most demanding material when screwing. Without pre-drilling, screws will systematically split the wood. Use HSS drill bits with a diameter equal to 70% of the screw diameter. This precaution applies to all components, including the treads and the quarter-turn module.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the BAVAT Oak and the BAVAT Beech?
The dimensions are identical (floor-to-floor height 280 cm, 13+nosing, riser height 20 cm, tread depth 19 cm, footprint 273 cm, stairwell opening 273x82 cm). The difference lies in the timber species: oak (700 kg/m³) is harder and more durable than beech (680 kg/m³), with a more pronounced grain and a warmer colour. The BAVAT Beech is delivered in 5 packages (more detailed packaging); the BAVAT Oak in 4 packages. Oak is priced higher.
Does the oak develop a patina over time?
Yes. Without treatment, raw oak turns golden on the surface over time due to light and oxidation. With a clear varnish, the initial colour is preserved. With an oil-wax or oak saturator, the colour deepens and becomes richer. These changes are natural and sought-after – they add character to the staircase without affecting its mechanical properties.
Can the BAVAT Oak be painted white?
Technically yes, but it would be a shame on glued-laminated oak – the species is chosen precisely for its visible natural grain. If a white finish is desired, the BAVAT Fir (less expensive) is more suitable. For oak, prefer transparent or tinted finishes that showcase the grain.
Can the BAVAT Oak handrail be fitted after assembly?
Yes. The handrail is optional and can be fitted after the staircase has been assembled. On a top quarter-turn, the handrail is not reversible – its orientation corresponds to the orientation of the staircase ordered. The screws are supplied with the handrail.
Can the BAVAT Oak be trimmed?
Yes. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the stringers can be trimmed according to the cutting chart in the instructions. For oak, trimming is done with a circular saw fitted with a hardwood blade – do not use a jigsaw, which would give an uneven cut. Check the floor-to-floor height on finished floor and finished ceiling before any work.
Which handrail do you recommend for the BAVAT Oak?
For maximum aesthetic consistency, an oak spindle handrail is ideal. Black metal bar handrails also pair very well with natural oak – the warm wood / black metal contrast is a contemporary classic. See the WoodUp accessories section for models compatible with a top quarter-turn 80 cm wide.
