BAVAT Quarter-Turn Top Staircase – Solid Fir, 280 cm, Standard Range

The BAVAT staircase in solid fir is the economical version of the top quarter-turn in the BAVAT range, also available in beech and glued-laminated oak. Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 14 treads, it offers a width of 80 cm on the rise (82 cm at the landing), a footprint of 273 cm, a riser height of 20 cm and a tread depth of 19 cm. Identical in dimensions to the BAVAT Beech and Oak, the BAVAT Fir is the most accessible version of the model. The recommended stairwell opening is identical to the BAVAT Beech (273x82 cm). Installation advice

Check the footprint (273 cm) and the stairwell opening (273x82 cm) before ordering. Determine the orientation (right or left) – this is final. Pre-drill before screwing into fir to avoid splitting, even though fir is softer than beech or oak. Minimum two people. The handrail can be added after assembly. Apply the finish after complete installation.

Maintenance and protection

Raw fir must be protected before first use. Without a finish, it absorbs dirt quickly. Options: varnish (maximum protection), oil-wax (natural look), paint (colour customisation). For a main staircase, a 2-coat varnish is recommended. Renewal every 5–7 years. Cleaning: damp cloth, neutral pH.

WoodUp tip

The BAVAT Fir is the economical version of the model – it offers exactly the same dimensions as the BAVAT Beech and the BAVAT Oak, at a lower price. Fir is perfectly suitable if the staircase is intended for standard family use with a careful finish. It is also the only BAVAT that can easily be painted – if you want a white or tinted staircase, this is the version to choose.

Worth knowing before buying: fir is significantly less dense than beech or oak (420 vs 680–700 kg/m³). On a main staircase with heavy traffic and children, the treads may show marks more quickly. A quality varnish and regular renewal compensate for this natural difference in durability.

Frequently asked questions

Can the BAVAT Fir be painted white?

Yes. Fir can be painted easily. Apply one coat of pore-filling primer, then 2 coats of acrylic wood paint (satin or semi-gloss for a staircase). Sand lightly between coats. A fir staircase painted white is one of the most popular finishes for contemporary interiors – paint also protects the wood very well.

What is the difference in durability between the BAVAT Fir and the BAVAT Beech?

Fir (420 kg/m³) is significantly less hard than beech (680 kg/m³). With intensive use, fir treads may show marks and scratches more quickly. With a reinforced varnish and regular maintenance (renewal every 5 years), fir remains perfectly acceptable. For very heavy traffic (large families, main staircase), beech or oak offer superior durability.

Does the BAVAT Fir have the same packaging as the BAVAT Beech?

Yes, the packaging is identical. Both versions are delivered in 5 packages: stringers (3060x220x70 mm / 17 kg), quarter-turn module (1060x550x120 mm / 24 kg), newel posts (2000x150x80 mm / 7 kg), treads (770x330x220 mm / 23 kg) and risers depending on version (750x200x220 mm / 14 kg). The only difference between the BAVAT Fir and the BAVAT Beech relates to the timber species, not the structure or the packaging.

Can the BAVAT Fir be trimmed?

Yes. The trimming is done on the stringers according to the cutting chart in the instructions. Fir is easier to trim than beech or oak – a jigsaw with a fine wood blade is sufficient. For a clean cut, use a circular saw with a guide. Check the floor-to-floor height on finished floor and finished ceiling before any trimming.

Can the handrail be fitted after the BAVAT Fir has been assembled?

Yes. The handrail is optional and can be fitted after the staircase has been assembled. On a top quarter-turn, the handrail is not reversible – its orientation corresponds to the orientation of the staircase ordered. The screws are supplied with the handrail.

What paint do you recommend for a fir staircase used by children?

For a fir staircase with heavy traffic and children, an acrylic floor and staircase paint in a satin finish (EN 71 toy standard for areas accessible to children) is recommended. Apply a bonding primer, then 2–3 coats of paint. Avoid gloss paints (too slippery) and oil-based paints (slow drying, strong odour).
