The BAVAT staircase in solid fir is the budget-friendly upper quarter-turn model in the BAVAT range, also available in beech and laminated oak. Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 14 steps, it has a width of 80 cm on the flight (82 cm at the top), a footprint of 273 cm, a rise of 20 cm and a going of 19 cm. The tread cross-section is 210x30 mm.

The BAVAT Fir has the same dimensions as the BAVAT Beech and Oak models and is the most affordable version. The recommended stairwell opening is the same as for the BAVAT Beech (273x82 cm). Installation advice

Check the footprint (273 cm) and stairwell opening (273x82 cm) before ordering. Choose right- or left-hand orientation carefully: it cannot be changed. Pre-drill before inserting screws into the fir to prevent splitting, even though fir is softer than beech or oak. At least two people are needed. The handrail can be added after assembly. Apply the finish once installation is complete.

Care and protection

Unfinished fir must be protected before first use. Without a finish, it quickly absorbs dirt. Options include stair varnish for maximum protection, hardwax oil for a natural look, or paint to customise the colour. For a main staircase, two coats of stair varnish are recommended. Reapply every 5–7 years. Clean with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.

The BAVAT Fir is the budget-friendly version of the model. It has exactly the same dimensions as the BAVAT Beech and BAVAT Oak, at a lower price. Fir is well suited to normal family use with a carefully applied finish. It is also the easiest BAVAT to paint: if you want a white or coloured staircase, this is the version to choose.

Before you buy: fir is considerably less dense than beech or oak (420 versus 680–700 kg/m³). On a heavily used main staircase in a home with children, the treads may show marks sooner. A quality stair varnish and regular reapplication help compensate for this difference in natural durability.

Yes. Fir is easy to paint. Apply a coat of pore-sealing primer, followed by two coats of acrylic wood paint (satin or semi-gloss for a staircase). Sand lightly between coats. A white-painted fir staircase is one of the most popular finishes for contemporary interiors, and the paint also protects the wood well.

How does the durability of the BAVAT Fir compare with the BAVAT Beech?

Fir (420 kg/m³) is significantly softer than beech (680 kg/m³). With heavy use, fir treads may show marks and scratches sooner. With a reinforced stair varnish and regular maintenance (reapplication every five years), fir remains a suitable option. Can the BAVAT Fir be trimmed to size?

Yes. The stringers can be trimmed according to the cutting chart in the instructions. Fir is easier to cut than beech or oak: a jigsaw with a fine-tooth wood blade will do. For a clean cut, use a circular saw with a guide. Check the floor-to-floor height after the floors and ceilings have been finished before making any cuts.

Can the handrail be fitted after the BAVAT Fir has been assembled?

Yes. The handrail is optional and can be installed after the staircase has been assembled. On an upper quarter-turn staircase, the handrail is not reversible: its orientation must match that of the staircase ordered. Fixings are supplied with the handrail.

What paint do you recommend for a fir staircase in a home with children?

For a fir staircase used heavily by a family with children, we recommend a satin-finish acrylic floor and stair paint that complies with the EN 71 toy safety standard for areas accessible to children. Apply a bonding primer, followed by 2–3 coats of paint. Avoid gloss paints, which are too slippery, and oil-based paints, which dry slowly and have a strong smell.
